    Abstract: A method and an apparatus for adaptively enhancing a color of an image are provided. The apparatus includes a saturation component deriving unit, a saturation enhancement function determining variable calculator, a saturation enhancement unit, and a saturation component synthesizing unit. The saturation component deriving unit derives a saturation component from an input image. The saturation enhancement function determining variable calculator determines a saturation enhancement function used to enhance the saturation of the input image based upon a predetermined reference value. The saturation enhancement unit changes the derived saturation component using the saturation enhancement function. The saturation component synthesizing unit synthesizes the changed saturation component and other components of the input image and generates an output image based upon the synthesized components.

The gamma converter output is determined without using a look up table based on at least one difference curve having a linear portion, a quartic portion, and a critical value where the liner portion and the quartic portion intersect. The liquid crystal display further includes a data driver receiving the image data for selecting and outputting gray voltages corresponding to the image data, and an inverter controlling a lamp to emit light with a luminance of 80 cd/m2 or more.

Then, a reference brightness is converted into each of the illuminance values corresponding to each of the brightness stages. The converted images with the illumination values corresponding to the brightness stages are displayed to the user, and an image that has a brightness value nearest to the brightness of ambient lighting is selected, and the brightness value of the selected image is determined as the brightness of ambient lighting.
