  • Publication number: 20170160243
Abstract: The present invention discloses a smart structural health monitoring device. The device is an intelligent sensor device mounted onto or near the structure to be monitored. The device includes an actuating unit that generates acoustic or ultrasonic excitation signals across the structure, a sensor unit that receives the structure's responses to the excitation signals and generates corresponding sensor data, a processing unit that determines the structure's structural health (e.g., structural change, structural defect, structural damage) by processing the sensor data with analytics algorithms. The smart device also includes at least a non-volatile memory (e.g., Flash memory) for storing the structural health information and sensor data. Such a smart structural health monitoring device is capable of independently determining the structural changes and damages. And multiple smart structural health monitoring devices can be used for monitoring one or more structures at the same time.

  • Publication number: 20170090655
Abstract: A force sensor for detecting a force on a surface of a device. The force sensor may include a force-receiving layer and a substrate disposed below the force-receiving layer. A first force-sensitive component may be disposed on a surface of the substrate, and a second force-sensitive component may be disposed proximate to the first force-sensitive component. In some embodiments, sensor circuitry may be operatively coupled to the first and second force-sensitive components, and configured to compare a relative electrical response between the first force-sensitive component and the second force-sensitive component to compute a force estimate. The force estimate may compensate for a variation in response based on the location of the components relative to a location of the force.

  • Publication number: 20170066668
Abstract: This present disclosure relates to a highly effective sewage treatment based on regulation and control of directed electron flow and apparatus thereof The apparatus includes an anaerobic fermentation electron generation chamber, a heterotrophic-autotrophic denitrification chamber and an aerobic membrane separation chamber. Low concentrated organic sewage is introduced into anaerobic fermentation electron generation chamber; then, particulate and partly dissolved organic substances are intercepted and absorbed by carrier materials; and extracellular currents generated by microorganism reaction are used in following autotrophic denitrification processing. Micro-/ultra-membrane separation processing is used to improve operation load and solid-liquid separation effect of sewage treatment and thereby effluent could meet the high recycling standards. The directed electron flow is regulated and controlled to enhance nutrients' removal and to reduce sludge yield and fouling rate of membrane.

  • Patent number: 9217730
Abstract: A structural health monitoring (SHM) system that protects its active and passive components with filter circuits, instead of switches. The active module of the SHM system utilizes a high pass filter, and the passive module of the SHM system utilizes a low pass filter. The active module transmits its interrogating, or excitation, signals at relatively high frequencies that are filtered out by the low pass filter of the passive module, preventing the passive module from sustaining any damage due to the high voltage excitation signals. Meanwhile, the high frequency interrogating signals are passed to the active module's circuitry by its high pass filter, where they can be analyzed accordingly.

  • Patent number: 9109999
Abstract: A method of performing transducer self-diagnostics and self-healing on an array of sensor transducers bonded to a structure for health monitoring includes measuring impedance to detect whether a transducer is missing, or a connection is damaged. Pitch-catch signals generated between one or more pairs of transducers are analyzed for detecting defects according to selected criteria of defect size and location to determine whether the sensors are damaged or partially/fully disbonded. Based on the resulting map of operational transducers, signal transmission paths are added/extended between additional pairs of transducers to maintain inspection coverage of the structure according to the selected criteria.

  • Patent number: 8990727
Abstract: Embodiments relate to a computer-implemented method for graphically displaying or presenting a fisheye-based view of a large data list on the limited content viewing area of a mobile device. At least a subset of data rows within the data list and graphical representations of a plurality of data fields of at least the subset of data rows are generated and graphically displayed using a graphical user interface of the mobile device. When a user selects a focus row from the displayed data rows, a fisheye-based view of the selected focus row is presented. The fisheye-based view and the graphical representations of the data fields provide the user with a focus-plus-context view of a large data list. Further, the graphical representations provide the user with meaningful information even when particular data items are too small to read specific values.

  • Patent number: 8639453
Abstract: A self-sufficient structural health monitoring system that can monitor a structure without need for external power input. Embodiments of the invention provide a structural health monitoring system with a power supply integrated within, so that the system relies on itself for operational power. Systems with such an on-board electrical power source, independent of an external power source (and in particular, independent of the power system(s) of the structure being monitored), are much more self-contained and self-sufficient.

  • Patent number: 8401804
Abstract: A trigger circuit for use with a structural health monitoring system. To save power, a structural health monitoring system is programmed with a sleep mode and a wake, or operational, mode. In its operational mode, the structural health monitoring system can perform its usual tasks, e.g. monitoring a structure and determining its structural health. In sleep mode, many functions are suspended, so that the system requires less power. The trigger circuit wakes the system when the sensors of the structural health monitoring system emit a sufficiently large signal, i.e. when an event occurs. That is, when not in use, the system enters sleep mode, and when some event occurs (e.g., impact, or some other stresses that are of concern), the trigger circuit alerts the system, prompting it to shift from sleep mode to operational mode and to begin taking/analyzing data.
