  • Publication number: 20170192511
Abstract: According to the teachings herein, a method and apparatus are provided for facilitating touch entries to a touchscreen of an electronic device. In particular, the teachings herein facilitate one-handed touch entry, such as where a user operates the touchscreen of the device using a digit of the same hand used to hold the device. Advantageously, an electronic device (10) detects when a user is reaching to make a touch input to the touchscreen (14) and it correspondingly adapts the visual content currently being displayed—i.e., the current screen (16)—responsive to detecting the reach. Example adaptations include any one or more of shifting, warping and resealing the screen, to bring an estimated touch target within a defined reach extent (130) configured in the electronic device.

  • Patent number: 9591721
Abstract: An apparatus comprises a controller and an input for receiving a signal from a microphone. The controller processes the signal from the microphone to detect a sound associated with the use of a consumable by a user, and generates an output in response to detecting that sound. For example the consumable may be pre-packaged and the sound may be associated with the packaging. In embodiments the controller controls ambient lighting in response to the sound of a first action (e.g. opening the cap of a container), and controls task lighting in response to the sound of a second action (e.g. dispensing the product from the container). In another embodiment the controller detects a sound indicative of the consumable running out (e.g. the hollow sound of the container being put down on a surface), and in response generates a visible indicator or transmits a signal over a network.

  • Publication number: 20170003519
Abstract: A device for controlling a lens for adjustable vision correction is provided. The device, e.g., a smartphone, comprises circuits to determine if a user of the device is gazing at the device, and, if the user is gazing at the device, to determine a distance between the eye and the device, and to control the lens to adjust its focal length based on the determined distance. Thereby, the lens is adjusted only if required, i.e., if the user is gazing at the device. The circuits may be suitable for correcting presbyopia if the user is gazing at a device located at close distance, and alleviate the need for the user to actively operate a switch or move her head for adjusting the focal length of her lenses.

  • Publication number: 20160352874
Abstract: An apparatus that helps a user grasp a hand-held device (10) resting on an underlying surface (S) detects when the user is reaching for the hand-held device. In response to the detection, the apparatus performs an action that elevates at least a part of the hand-held device above the underlying surface. Elevating the hand-held device above the underlying surface allows the user to grasp and lift the hand-held device off of the underlying surface more easily.

  • Publication number: 20160345414
Abstract: The disclosure relates to the control of a lighting system illuminating a space such as a room. The controller receives signals from a mobile user terminal, including an indication of a user input entered by a user via an on-screen user interface of the mobile user terminal. The controller is also able to determine a position from which the user input was entered by the user. Further, each of a plurality of discrete control policies is associated with a respective positional demarcation within the space in question, where each control policy defines a respective type of response of the illumination to one or more on-screen elements of the lighting-control user interface. Based on this association, the controller selects one of the control policies associated with the determined position. The controller then controls the lighting system to provide the illumination in accordance with the response defined by the selected control policy.

  • Publication number: 20160345407
Abstract: A controller, method and program for controlling one or more sources of a utility to provide the utility into a space occupied by one or more users, e.g. for controlling light sources illuminating an indoor or outdoor space. An input from one or more sensors is processed to detect motions of a user in the space, to detect that the motions correspond to predetermined gestures performed by the user, and to detect a position from which each gesture was performed. Further, each of a plurality of discrete control policies is associated with a respective combination of predetermined gesture and positional demarcation within the space. Each control policy defines a respective response of the utility to the respective associated gesture. For gestures performed from each of a plurality of different positions, a different control policy is selected based on being associated with the detected gesture and detected position.
