  • Publication number: 20050192605
Abstract: A surgical instrument (10) is adapted to contact tissue of a patient, and to provide traction with the tissue in order to inhibit migration of the instrument relative to the tissue. The instrument may include a pair of opposing jaws (16, 18) with at least one of the jaws (16, 18) comprising a substrate having a particular surface facing the tissue, and a plurality of discrete elements (26, 28) disposed on the particular surface for increasing the traction of the instrument relative to the tissue. These discrete elements (26, 28) may include a multiplicity of granules, bristles, or projections, and may be formed of materials having various properties such as hydrophilic characteristics. The discrete elements in the form of bristles can be oriented too so that the column strength of each bristle provides increased traction in a predetermined direction.

  • Publication number: 20050177102
Abstract: A drainage catheter is adapted to drain fluid from the body cavity through a body conduit and includes an elongate tube and a retention member disposed at the distal end of the elongate tube. The retention member is adapted for movement between a low-profile state facilitating insertion of the catheter and a high-profile state facilitating retention of the catheter in its operative position. A woven mesh forms at least a portion of one of the tube and the retention member. The woven mesh can be formed of filaments heat-settable so that the catheter automatically moves to the high-profile state. Insertion of the catheter can be facilitated using a stylet which can be removed after insertion to permit the catheter to automatically return to its high-profile state.

  • Publication number: 20050165444
Abstract: A tissue welding apparatus is adapted to fuse a first piece of tissue to a second piece of tissue which are disposed in a surface proximate relationship. An elongate shaft carries a first jaw, and a second opposing jaw moveable relative to the first jaw. At least one penetrating member is carried by the first jaw and moveable relative to the second jaw to create a channel through the first piece of material and the second piece of material. A source of heat is coupled to the penetrating member for denaturing the tissue defining the channel. This denatured tissue forms a column binding the first piece of tissue to the second piece of tissue. A chemical agent can be carried to the tissue with the penetrating member.

  • Publication number: 20050159647
Abstract: A laparoscopic insufflation device is provided in the configuration of a coil with a blunt tip. The device is capable of passing through the abdominal wall without cutting tissue, and exiting the abdominal wall substantially parallel to the inner surface. While rotation of the coiled device results in forward movement through the abdominal wall, a counter force can be applied to the device to create a safety space between the wall and the interior organs. With the blunt distal tip, parallel exit angle, and safety space, there is substantially no threat to the interior organs during placement of the device. Further space can be generated with the use of pressured gas to produce an abdominal cavity for the subsequent placement of trocars. By rotatably attaching the coiled insufflation device to a trocar, the advantage of a counter force can be used not only to establish the safety space but also to pull the trocar into the abdominal wall with a counterforce which resists tenting.

  • Publication number: 20050119682
Abstract: A fluid controlled device is adapted for disposition in a body conduit where it controls the flow of body fluids within the conduit. A sleeve is provided with a wall of separation having a first surface which defines a flow passage facilitating the flow of body fluids, and a second surface which defines an exclusion chamber sealed from the flow passage. Various dilators have properties for moving the seal between a low-profile state facilitating insertion of the device, any high-profile state defining the flow passage and exclusion chamber. The dilator may be skeletal, inflatable, and/or porous. An associated method includes the step of dilating a dilation assembly to move a wall from a low profile, insertible state, to a high-profile wherein the wall defines a flow passage and an exclusion cavity.

  • Publication number: 20050113936
Abstract: The invention is directed to nanostructure surface treatments, coatings or modifications formed from nanoscale building blocks. The nanostructure surface treatments, modifications or coatings have hydrophobic, hydrophilic and surface adherence properties. The nanoscale building blocks have orientation, geometry, packing density and composition that may be adjusted to control the unique surface characteristics of the desired treatment, coating or modification. Applications of this nanostructure technology include surgical clips, staples, retractors, sutures and manipulators where an improvement in traction, retention or occlusion is desired without excessive material or tissue deformation or where high compressive forces would be undesirable, dangerous or ineffective. In one aspect, a nanostructure surface treatment for a medical device having an external surface is disclosed, wherein the treatment is applied on the external surface to provide a hydrophobic or a hydrophilic surface.

  • Publication number: 20050096699
Abstract: The invention is directed to a device and method for securing a passed surgical suture in a manner similar to a tied knot. The suture securing device comprises a male piece having a top portion, a center shaft having one end connected to the top portion, and an end member having a capturing feature connected to another end of the center shaft; and a female piece having a top end and a bottom end comprising a column being generally cylindrical in shape and forming a hollow opening along its length, wherein the opening slidingly receives the center shaft and a suture to be captured and held by the capturing feature, the suture being secured in place between the column and the center shaft. The assembled male and female pieces are irreversibly interlocked and form a lightly compressed, convoluted or tortuous pathway. The capturing feature is formed to engage and obliquely capture the suture from different angles. The radii of the male and female pieces are preferably greater than the radius of the suture.

  • Publication number: 20050074314
Abstract: This invention defines a facility that accepts and mechanically parks automobiles. The facility is a group of adjacent bays; each bay is one car wide, has a ground floor that provides access and egress to entrance and delivery portals, and has multiple levels of storage above (or below) the ground floor. Each storage level of each bay has four storage stalls, two longitudinally forward of and two longitudinally behind a central elevator shaft. Vehicles are stored on pallets; there is a pallet for every storage stall. A single-wide or multiple-wide elevator operates within the elevator shaft of each bay or group of bays. The elevators are double-deck; the upper deck is a temporary storage stall, and the lower deck is the basic transport floor. Horizontal travel of pallets is accomplished by gearmotor-driven pinions in all stalls that mesh with toothed racks on the undersides of the pallets.
