Patent number: 8712801Abstract: Various mechanisms are provided herein for automated institutional processing of payments. For example, fund can be transferred from one party to another party by transfer of funds from a static account into a dynamically created transaction account. Such a transfer can have additional features, including the refunding of the transfer funds and revocation thereof. According to another example, insurance claims can be automatically processed by transferring funds when claims are filed (with or without evidentiary documents). Such transfers can then be validated afterwards. Thus, when claims are received, they can be quickly examined for the relevant fields, such as claim amount, and then the amount can be disbursed in a matter of minutes after receiving a claim submission. Such disbursement, moreover, can be governed according to various heuristics, including the trustworthiness of claimants and rules regarding maximum disbursement amounts.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 2007Date of Patent: April 29, 2014Assignee: United Services Automobile Association (USAA)Inventors: Charles Lee Oakes, III, Rickey Dale Burks, Randy Ray Morlen

Patent number: 8577805Abstract: Mechanisms for virtual banking are disclosed herein that provide experiences to users as if they were actually interacting with a branch office bank. For instance, virtual lockboxes are provided to users, and users can fill these lockboxes with the type of digital data that would traditionally be placed in a branch office bank lockbox. Birth certificates, social security numbers, wills, etc., can be uploaded from a user's remote computing device to a server associated with a bank. In another aspect, currency cards are disclosed that mimic cash withdrawal (or deposit) transactions users might engage in at typical branch offices. For example, users can download money from a bank server onto a currency card located at some remote location (or, alternatively, upload money from the card to the server, which would amount to a deposit being made to the bank).Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2007Date of Patent: November 5, 2013Assignee: United Services Automobile Association (USAA)Inventors: Charles Lee Oakes, III, Rickey Dale Burks, Randy Ray Morlen

Patent number: 8538872Abstract: Account shadowing is provided such that when a charge is made on a first credit card (e.g., a high interest rate credit card) of a user, a transfer of funds is made from a second credit card (e.g., a low interest rate credit card) of the user to pay the charge made to the first credit card. This may transfer the balance from a user's high interest rate credit card to a user's low interest rate credit card. In this manner, the user may receive the reward incentives of a high interest rate credit card while using a low interest rate credit card to satisfy balances due.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2012Date of Patent: September 17, 2013Assignee: United Services Automobile Association (USAA)Inventors: Teddy Joseph Edmond Voutour, Charles Lee Oakes, III

Patent number: 8320657Abstract: To deposit a negotiable instrument electronically, a digital image may be used. Systems and methods are described herein that facilitate the use of a digital camera to provide the digital image. A user may capture an image of a negotiable instrument to create a digital image. The digital image may be compressed and saved as a digital image file. The user may then transmit the digital image file to a financial institution, such as a bank, to deposit funds drawn from the account of the negotiable instrument into the user's account. A financial institution may receive digital image files created by a digital camera from account holders and process a deposit request using the digital image file.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2007Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: United Services Automobile Association (USAA)Inventors: Rickey Dale Burks, Charles Lee Oakes, III, Randy Ray Morlen, Bharat Prasad, Michael Frank Morris, Xia Hua

Patent number: 8145661Abstract: Disclosed herein are a method, system, and computer-readable storage medium with instructions for recommending locations to a user. Preferred criteria may be selected by the user, for example, or a third party, and provide objective or subjective information that the user is seeking in a location. Embodiments may include compiling objective information with the location and comparing the objective information to preferred criteria. A user's profile may be compared to an other person's profile, where the other person's profile is associated to the location. A location may be recommended to the user if the objective information correlates to the preferred criteria and if the other person's profile correlates to the user's profile. Patent number: 8036160Abstract: Disclosed herein are a system, method, and computer-readable medium with instructions for recommending a service provider based on a user's approximate current location. The service provider may be recommended for a service that is verified under a user's insurance policy and is also within proximity to the user's approximate current location. The user's approximate current location may be determined by location-based technology. The entity that receives and/or recommends the service provider may initiate a request for the service from the service provider. Further embodiments are related to routing a call to provide information to the user that is responsive to the user's location-relevant request. For example, systems, such as an automotive telematics system, may request information and be routed to the appropriate division of a user's insurance provider such that the automotive telematics system can provide services to the user that are user-specific (e.g., covered by the user's insurance policy).Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2008Date of Patent: October 11, 2011Assignee: United Services Automobile Association (USAA)Inventor: Charles Lee Oakes, III
