An analyte characteristic is determined based on a color of the captured reaction area in the image.

In a measurement phase after the sample is introduced to the reaction area on the test strip, the method also includes illuminating the test strip with a light provided by a light source area on the screen, detecting with the camera one or more colors of the reaction area, correcting the detected one or more colors for the ambient light effect, correlating the corrected one or more colors to an analyte property, and displaying a value of the analyte property on the screen.
