  • Patent number: 9604645
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for performing a multiple gear downshift of a transmission gear by transiently operating in an intermediate gear. • Publication number: 20170082081
Abstract: Various systems and methods are described for controlling pre-ignition in a boosted engine in a newly manufactured vehicle. One method comprises, during a pre-delivery phase of the vehicle, operating the boosted engine in a pre-delivery calibration with a first, higher enrichment, in response to a pre-ignition event. The pre-delivery calibration is deactivated during a post-delivery phase and the boosted engine is operated with a second, lower enrichment in response to a pre-ignition event.

  • Publication number: 20170051688
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for improving the detection and mitigation of high speed pre-ignition. In one example, high speed pre-ignition is detected based on concurrent or sequential changes in an integrated knock sensor output in a knock window as well as a pre-ignition window. The high speed pre-ignition is addressed using cylinder fuel deactivation and/or engine load limiting to reduce the risk for run-away pre-ignition.

  • Publication number: 20170051690
Abstract: Various systems and methods are described for controlling fuel injection in a variable displacement engine. One method for a deactivatable cylinder comprises, before deactivating the cylinder responsive to operating conditions, disabling a port injector and fueling the cylinder only via the direct injector. The method further comprises, when reactivating the cylinder from deactivation, enabling both the port injector and the direct injector, and injecting a higher amount of fuel via the direct injector while simultaneously injecting a lower amount of fuel via the port injector.

  • Publication number: 20170051658
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for cleaning out condensate stored at a charge air cooler. In response to increased condensate accumulation at a charge air cooler, airflow through the engine is increased to purge the condensate while an engine actuator is adjusted to maintain engine torque. Combustion stability issues of engine cylinders are addressed by adjusting fueling of each cylinder individually during condensate ingestion.

  • Publication number: 20170030322
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for addressing spark plug soot fouling. In one example, spark plug tip temperatures are raised and maintained elevated by advancing spark timing and increasing engine speed, while reducing an amount of EGR being delivered to the engine. The spark plug fouling mitigating actions are adjusted based on whether the engine is in a green condition at an assembly plant or not.

  • Publication number: 20170030321
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for addressing spark plug soot fouling. In one example, a method may include alternating one or more combustion events with spark timing advanced with one or more combustion events with nominal spark timing. • Patent number: 9551288
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for reducing late burn induced cylinder pre-ignition events. Forced entry of residuals from a late burning cylinder into a neighboring cylinder may be detected based on engine block vibrations sensed in a window during an open exhaust valve of the late burning cylinder. In response to the entry of residuals, a pre-ignition mitigating action, such as fuel enrichment or deactivation, is performed in the neighboring cylinder.

  • Publication number: 20170002786
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for inferring spark plug fouling due to accumulation of fuel additives thereon. In one example, an engine controller may infer spark plug hot fouling based on higher than expected exhaust temperatures by correlating the elevated exhaust temperature with late combustion phasing due to additive accumulation. A confidence factor of the spark plug hot fouling detection may be enhanced based on data regarding concurrent misfire and/or pre-ignition events.

  • Patent number: 9534530
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for adjusting charge motion control devices coupled to a series of cylinders organized into cylinder groups, one of the cylinder groups including a dedicated EGR cylinder group wherein the cylinders are the only engine cylinder routing exhaust to an engine intake. In one example, a first cylinder group may be a dedicated cylinder group recirculating exhaust to the intake manifold while a second cylinder group may be a non-dedicated cylinder group routing exhaust to a turbine. A method may include adjusting a first charge motion control device coupled to the first cylinder group and a second charge motion control device coupled to the second cylinder group to vary a charge motion level between the first and second cylinder groups.

  • Patent number: 9534984
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for inferring spark plug fouling due to accumulation of fuel additives thereon. In one example, an engine controller may infer spark plug fouling due to accumulation of fuel additive based on a combination of engine operating parameters correlated with spark plug health. For example, the engine operating parameters may include a change in an adaptive knock term, an engine pre-ignition rate, and engine exhaust oxygen sensor switching frequency over a vehicle drive cycle, and an engine misfire rate.
