  • Patent number: 7355440
Abstract: A programmable logic device (PLD) having minimal leakage current for inactive logic blocks is provided. The PLD includes an array of logic blocks. Among the array of logic blocks, one of the array of logic blocks monitors the level of activity of each of the remaining logic blocks. The level of activity may be monitored by observing the input and output pin of the logic blocks. The PLD further includes a plurality of driven wires defining a routing pattern between the array of logic blocks. When one of the array of logic blocks detect inactivity in any one of the remaining logic blocks for a certain duration, the one of the array logic blocks transmits a signal invoking a sleep mode for the inactive logic blocks. A sleep transistor with a threshold voltage level that is capable minimizing the leakage current is associated with each of the remaining block. The gate of the sleep transistor receives the signal transmitted by one of the array logic blocks and the signal switches off the sleep transistor.

  • Patent number: 7295036
Abstract: A programmable logic device having logic block that can be selectively placed in a reduced power consumption mode is provided. The PLD includes a plurality of logic array blocks (LABs) and a plurality of interconnects defining signal pathways between the plurality of LABs. Sleep control logic of the PLD issues a sleep control signal for placing at least a portion of the plurality of LABs in a sleep mode. Bias control logic of the PLD is in communication with the sleep control logic. The bias control logic is triggered by the sleep control signal to issue a first bias control signal and a second bias control signal. The first and second bias control signals are transmitted to corresponding transistors of the LABS. The first and second bias control signals apply a reverse bias to corresponding transistor wells to increase threshold voltages for the respective transistors.

  • Patent number: 7287189
Abstract: A reconfigurable device loads I/O configuration information from a diagnostic interface during testing. The device includes a configurable I/O connection for communicating values with other devices. A diagnostic interface communicates the value of the I/O connection to a tester. A diagnostic controller in the device has a first mode for communicating the value on the I/O connection to the tester via the diagnostic interface, and a second mode for receiving an I/O configuration attribute value for the I/O connection from the diagnostic interface thereby modifying the configuration of the I/O connection. The device also includes a configuration controller that retrieves device configuration information from a configuration device in response to a signal. The signal can originate from an external source or from the diagnostic controller in response to a configuration instruction received via the diagnostic interface. The diagnostic interface may be a JTAG interface.

  • Patent number: 7218133
Abstract: An embodiment of this invention pertains to a versatile and flexible logic element and logic array block (“LAB”). Each logic element includes a programmable combinational logic function block such as a lookup table (“LUT”) and a flip-flop. Within the logic element, multiplexers are provided to allow the flip-flop and the LUT to be programmably connected such that either the output of the LUT may be connected to the input of the flip-flop or the output of the flip-flop may be connected to the input of the LUT. An additional multiplexer allows the output of the flip-flop in one logic element to be connected to the input of a flip-flop in a different logic element within the same LAB. Output multiplexers selects between the output of the LUT and the output of the flip-flop to generate signals that drive routing lines within the LAB and to routing lines external to the LAB.

  • Patent number: 6970014
Abstract: An embodiment of this invention pertains to a 3-sided routing architecture to interconnect function blocks, such as logic array blocks (“LABs”), within a programmable logic device (“PLD”). In the 3-sided routing architecture, inputs and outputs on a first side of a function block connect to a first channel, and inputs and outputs on a second side of the function block connect to a second channel where the second side is opposite the first side. Inputs and outputs on a third side of the function block connect to a third channel. A fourth channel associated with a fourth side of the function block, the fourth side opposite the third side, is coupled only to the first channel and the second channel. In one configuration, the inputs and outputs on each of the first side, the second side, and the third side have an equal number of inputs and outputs. In this configuration, each of the first channel, the second channel, and the third channel have the same width.

  • Patent number: 6895570
Abstract: An embodiment of this invention pertains to a wire that interconnects multiple function blocks within a programmable logic device (“PLD”). An electrically optimum physical length is determined for the wire. A wire having the electrically optimum physical length transmits a signal down the wire as fast as possible. Some of the wires used in the PLD have a physical length substantially the same as the electrically optimum physical length or an adjustment of the electrically optimum physical length to account for non-electrical considerations. The physical length, as used herein, is the measured length of the wire. A logical length of the wire, as used herein, is the number of function blocks that the wire spans. Given that the function blocks have a different height and width, the logical length of the wire varies depending on the orientation of the wire. A routing architecture is an array that includes rows and columns of function blocks.

  • Patent number: 6879183
Abstract: A programmable logic device has a plurality of super-regions of programmable circuitry disposed on the device in a two-dimensional array of such super-regions. Each super-region includes a plurality of regions of programmable logic and a region of programmable memory. Each logic region includes a plurality of subregions of programmable logic. Each super-region has associated interconnection resources for allowing communication between the logic and memory regions of that super-region without the need to use, for such relatively local interconnections, the longer-length inter-super-region interconnection resources that are also provided on the device.

  • Patent number: 6819135
Abstract: A programmable logic integrated circuit device has a plurality of areas of programmable logic disposed on the device in a two-dimensional array of intersecting rows and columns of such areas. A so-called “fast conductor” network is provided on the device for rapidly and efficiently distributing a relatively small number of signals to substantially any logic area on the device. The fast conductor network has several main conductors that substantially bisect the array in one direction (e.g., by extending parallel to the column axis). Some main conductors can carry signals from off the device. Other main conductors can carry signals generated on the device. The network further includes secondary conductors that extend transverse to the main conductors (e.g., along each row of logic areas). Programmable logic connectors are provided for selectively applying signals from the main conductors to the secondary conductors and from the secondary conductors to the logic areas.

Abstract: A programmable logic array integrated circuit device includes a plurality of regions of programmable logic disposed on the device in a two-dimensional array of intersecting rows and columns. Interconnection conductors are associated with each row and column. The interconnection conductors associated with each row include some that extend continuously along the entire length of the row and some that extend continuously along only the left or right half of the row. To increase the flexibility with which the logic regions can be connected to the row and column conductors, adjacent regions are paired and circuitry is provided for allowing the outputs of each pair to be swapped for driving the row and column conductors. Registers in logic regions can still be used for other purposes when not being used to register the main combinatorial outputs of the logic regions. Many other enhanced features are also provided.

Horizontal and vertical inter-super-region interconnection conductors are associated with each row and column, respectively.
