  • Patent number: 7908251
Abstract: A quorum-based server power-down mechanism allows a manager in a computer cluster to power-down unresponsive servers in a manner that assures that an unresponsive server does not become responsive again. In order for a manager in a cluster to power down servers in the cluster, the cluster must have quorum, meaning that a majority of the computers in the cluster must be responsive. If the cluster has quorum, and if the manager server did not fail, the manager causes the failed server(s) to be powered down. If the manager server did fail, the new manager causes all unresponsive servers in the cluster to be powered down. If the power-down is successful, the resources on the failed server(s) may be failed over to other servers in the cluster that were not powered down. If the power-down is not successful, the cluster is disabled.

  • Patent number: 7902519
Abstract: The method includes providing the volume of waste in a monitoring space; providing a support, the support being provided with a plurality of detectors for radioactive material; monitoring the volume of waste for radioactive material, in one or more parts, to give a monitoring results; and correcting the monitoring result for geometry and/or attenuation to give a corrected result using a correction factor. The correction factor is obtained by a method that includes providing a simulation of an equivalent volume of waste free of radioactive material in an equivalent monitoring space, with equivalent detectors; providing a known activity radioactive source at one or more positions in the volume of waste; determining the detector response to the source in a position, a comparison of the response and known activity contributing to a correction function for that equal volume, one or more such correction functions providing the correction factor.

  • Patent number: 7839969
Abstract: A method and device for detecting mercury or other material deposits on an inner surface of an enclosed passage are provided. The device includes a detection unit that is adapted to be transported through the passage, and the detection unit includes a radiation source and an x-ray fluorescence detector. The radiation source is configured to emit a radiation emission toward the inner surface of the passage to excite a portion of the inner surface, and the x-ray fluorescence detector is configured to detect a resulting x-ray emission from the portion of the inner surface to identify a material deposit on the inner surface. The detection unit can identify material deposits at successive positions along a length of the passage and thereby generate a plurality of data points, each data point providing an indication of a material deposit existence for a corresponding position along the length of the passage.

  • Patent number: 7795634
Abstract: A modular semiconductor light source assembly includes a semiconductor light source, such as a light emitting diode, which is mounted on a substrate which supplies electricity to the light source and which assists in removing waste heat therefrom. Substantially all of the light emitted by the LED is transferred to a lens by a light pipe, the cross section of the light pipe increasing from the light source to the lens and the lens having a general D-shape such that the light pattern formed by the lens is constrained in a first direction orthogonal to a second direction. The assembly can be combined with other similar assemblies or other light sources in a light fixture to produce a desired overall beam pattern such as a automobile headlamp low beam or high beam pattern.

  • Publication number: 20100000910
Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to removing a trace element from a liquid hydrocarbon feed. The liquid hydrocarbon feed, containing the trace element, is mixed with the water along with a hydrocarbon-soluble additive. While being mixed, a compound, which in some cases is preferably insoluble, is formed by the hydrocarbon-soluble additive chemically reacting with the trace element. A phase separation device, such as a desalter or an oil-water separator, receives the oil-water emulsion containing the compound and resolves the mixture to produce the compound, effluent brine, and effluent liquid hydrocarbon with a reduced concentration of the trace element as compared to the liquid hydrocarbon feed. In some embodiments, the present invention is directed to removing elemental mercury from a liquid hydrocarbon feed. A hydrocarbon-soluble sulfur-containing additive, typically an organic polysulfide, is mixed with the liquid hydrocarbon feed and water.
