  • Publication number: 20220133384
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a hollow cable for transmitting radiofrequency and/or microwave frequency energy to an electrosurgical instrument, wherein the hollow cable is provided with electrical connectors for forming a bipolar electrical connection with an electrosurgical instrument that fits within, e.g. slides relative to, the hollow cable. The connectors can be conductive protrusions extending in an axial direction on opposite sides of the cable. The protrusions can be tabs, fins, rods, pins, or wires. The protrusions can be strips which engage corresponding terminals on the instrument. The transmission line structure of the invention can have a greater diameter then convention coaxial cables, which can minimise loss whilst still providing access for control wires and/or fluid to reach an surgical instrument. The cable can be used with multiple instruments.

  • Patent number: 11241283
Abstract: An electrosurgical device capable of both: (i) generating a radiative microwave field to perform either blood coagulation or sterilization, and (ii) dispensing a liquid to a target area, e.g. adrenaline for the treatment of peptic ulcers. Using microwave energy allows controlled coagulation which is unaffected by changes in tissue impedance during coagulation, and which can achieve a high level of coagulation within a given time. The electrosurgical device comprises a probe tip having a coaxial transmission line that includes a hollow inner conductor having a dielectric material formed on an inner surface thereof. A liquid-conveying channel is located inside the dielectric material. The probe tip includes a conductive element coupled to receive microwave energy from the coaxial transmission line, the conductive element forming a radiating antenna structure for emitting a microwave EM field outwardly from the probe tip.

  • Publication number: 20220008129
Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument having a radiating tip portion capable performing tissue ablation using microwave energy and electroporation (e.g. non-thermal irreversible electroporation) in a minimally invasive manner. The electrosurgical instrument may be used to perform microwave ablation and electroporation separately (e.g. sequentially) or simultaneously. The radiating tip portion may be dimensioned to be suitable for insertion into a pancreas via a surgical scoping device, to provide a rapid and accurate alternative to known RF ablation techniques. By enabling tumours within the pancreas to be treated using a minimally invasive procedure, it may be a viable option to use ablation and/or electroporation treatment for both curative as well as palliative reasons.

  • Publication number: 20210378738
Abstract: An electrosurgical device having a radiating tip portion for delivering electromagnetic energy to biological tissue, where the electrosurgical device is disposed in a catheter. The electrosurgical device is movable relative to the catheter between a deployed position where the radiating tip portion is exposed and a retracted position where the radiating tip portion is contained within the catheter. In this manner, the radiating tip portion may be retracted until the moment when it is to be used. This may facilitate insertion of the device through an instrument channel of a surgical scoping device. In particular, this may prevent the radiating tip portion from catching on the instrument channel when the device is inserted into the instrument channel, which could cause damage to the instrument channel and/or radiating tip portion.

  • Publication number: 20210298823
Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument for delivering radiofrequency (RF) and/or microwave energy into biological tissue that is also configured to obtain images of a treatment site performing invasive electrosurgery. In one aspect, the invention provides a chip-based images sensor at the distal end of a cable that also conveys energy for electrosurgery. In another aspect, both light emitting and light sensing element are mounted at the distal end of a probe for insertion through the instrument channel of a surgical scoping device, whereby optical signals do not need to be conveyed through the scoping device, because the transition from electrical signals to optical radiation and back to electrical signals occurs at the distal end.

  • Publication number: 20210267681
Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument for delivering microwave energy to biological tissue, in which a pair of conductive tuning elements are mounted in a radiating instrument tip to shape a microwave radiation profile of the instrument so that the radiation profile is constrained around the instrument tip. Such tuning elements may result in a radiation profile that is substantially spherical around the instrument tip, providing a well-defined ablation volume. • Patent number: 11097022
Abstract: A sterilization system having a controllable non-ionizing microwave radiation source for providing microwave energy for combining with a gas to produce atmospheric low temperature plasma for sterilizing biological tissue surfaces or the like. A plasma generating region may be contained in a hand held plasma applicator. The system may include an impedance adjustor e.g. integrated in the plasma applicator arranged to set a plasma strike condition and plasma sustain condition. The gas and microwave energy may be transported to a plasma generating region along an integrated cable assembly. The Integrated cable assembly may provide a two way gas flow arrangement to permit residual gas to be removed from the surface. Invasive surface plasma treatment is therefore possible. The plasma applicator may have multiple plasma emitters to produce a line or blanket of plasma.

  • Patent number: 11090116
Abstract: An electrosurgical waveform having both radiofrequency (RF) energy and microwave energy components that is arranged to perform efficient haemostasis in biological tissue. The waveform comprises a first portion primarily of RF electromagnetic energy, and a second portion primarily of microwave electromagnetic energy that follows the first portion. The second portion further comprises a plurality of RF pulses, wherein the first portion transitions to the second portion when either a duration of the first portion meets or exceeds a predetermined duration threshold, or an impedance determined during the first portion meets or exceeds a predetermined threshold. The waveform is arranged to deliver energy rapidly so that haemostasis can occur in a short time frame in a situation where the maximum available power is limited, or to avoid undesirable thermal damage to the biological tissue.
