  • Publication number: 20210171727
Abstract: The electrochemical energy conversion system include an anode, a cathode, and a proton exchange membrane disposed between the anode and the cathode. The proton exchange membrane includes a polymer having a hard block polymer, a soft block polymer, and one or more hydrophilic functional groups attached to the soft block polymer. The glass transition temperature of the hard block polymer is higher than a glass transition temperature of the soft block polymer, such that the hard block polymer is non-elastic and the soft block polymer is elastic at a desired operating temperature. The hydrophilic functional groups are attached to the soft block polymer via a thiol-ene reaction to modify double bonds in the soft block polymer.

  • Publication number: 20210108067
Abstract: An ion exchange membrane material is composed of a crosslinked polymer network including a first poly(styrene-b-ethylene-r-butylene-b-styrene) triblock copolymer (SEBS), and second SEBS, and a linker crosslinking the first SEBS and the second SEBS. At least one phenyl group from the first SEBS and the second SEBS is functionalized with an alkyl group, and the carbon at the benzylic position of these alkyl groups is saturated with at least two additional alkyl groups. The linker is a diamine bound to the alkyl functional groups. The ion exchange membrane material is made via a substantially simultaneous quaternization and crosslinking reaction between the diamine linker and SEBS functionalized with alkyl halide groups. Increasing concentration of crosslinker in produces membranes with reduced water uptake, leading to an expectation of enhanced stability under hydrated conditions and greater durability. Advantageously, this reduction in water uptake came with little change to ion exchange capacity.

  • Publication number: 20200238272
Abstract: The electrochemical energy conversion system of the present disclosure includes an anode, a cathode, and an ion exchange membrane including a polymer having an aromatic polymer chain and an alkylated substrate including an alkyl chain, and at least one ionic group. The alkylated substrate is bound to at least one aromatic group in the polymer chain via Friedel-Crafts alkylation of the at least one aromatic group. The alkylation reaction utilizes a haloalkylated tertiary alcohol or a haloalkylated alkene as a precursor. In the presence of an acid catalyst, a carbocation is generated in the precursor which reacts with the aromatic rings of the polymer chain. The at least one ionic group is then replaced with a desired cationic or anionic group using a substitution reaction. The membranes exhibit advantageous stability achieved through a simplified and scalable reaction scheme.

  • Publication number: 20200091535
Abstract: Hydrocarbon proton exchange membranes are disclosed that are composed of a material including a hydrophobic main chain, and acidic side chains. The main chain includes a polyaryl structure that is substantially free of ether linkages and also includes a fluoromethyl substituted carbon. The acidic side chains include a hydrocarbon tether terminated by a strongly acidic group, such as a fluoroalkyl sulfonate group. Chemical stability of the material is increased by removing the ether linkages from the main chain. The hydrophobic main chain and substantially hydrophilic side chains create a phase-separated morphology that affords enhanced transport of protons and water across the membrane even at low relative humidity levels. These materials are advantageous as membranes for use in fuel cells, redox flow batteries, water hydrolysis systems, sensors, electrochemical hydrogen compressors, actuators, water purifiers, gas separators, etc.

  • Patent number: 7671157
Abstract: The C—H bond of pendant aromatic groups such as commercial polystyrenes with three types of tacticities (syndiotactic, isotactic, atactic) undergo catalyzed functionalization with boron reagents. A boronic ester group formed on the polymer in the polystyrene was further converted to hydroxy and arene via oxidation and coupling reactions, respectively. These functionalizations proceeded without significantly affecting the molecular weight of starting polymer and the functional concentrations could be easily controlled by changing the ratio of boron reagent to monomer unit.

  • Publication number: 20100041834
Abstract: Designed functionality is incorporated onto a preformed aromatic polymer. The preformed aromatic polymer is provided in a reactive medium. Within that reactive medium is provided a borylation reagent and a catalyst for C—H borylation. A; and a C—H position on an aromatic ring on the preformed aromatic polymer is catalytically borylated with the borylating agent to form a borylated aromatic moiety on the preformed aromatic polymer as an incorporated boryl functionality. That boryl functionality may then be reacted with designed alternative functionalities.

  • Patent number: 7615300
Abstract: New thermally and chemically stable sulfonic acid-containing polymers are synthesized via post-sulfonation of aromatic polymers. These new polymers provide unique benefits to proton exchange membrane fuel cell technology (“PEMFC”). As a sulfonic acid moiety can be easily installed into an aromatic ring via electrophilic sulfonation, even in the presence of an electron-withdrawing substituent such as —F, rigid polymers consisting of aromatic rings at either the side chain or main chain can be prepared with a wide range of substituents and flexibility in properties. Novel synthetic procedures are provided for synthesis of the polymers.
