  • Patent number: 7459121
Abstract: Methods and devices are provided for the continuous production of a network of nanotubes or other nanoscale fibers. The method includes making a suspension of nanoscale fibers dispersed in a liquid medium, optionally with surfactant and/or sonication, and filtering the suspension by moving a filter membrane through the suspension, such that the nanoscale fibers are deposited directly on the filter membrane as the fluid medium flows through the filter membrane, thereby forming a continuous membrane of the nanoscale fibers. The deposition of the nanoscale fibers can occur when and where the filter membrane moves into contact with a static, porous filter element or a dynamic, porous filter element. The filtering can be conducted within a magnetic field effective to align the nanoscale fibers, and/or with the aid of vacuum to pull water through the filter membrane, applied pressure to press water though the filter membrane, or a combination thereof.

  • Publication number: 20080280115
Abstract: A technique is provided for the fabrication of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) and carbon nanofiber (CNF) film materials. The method includes mixing a relatively small amount of single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) with larger amounts of MWNTs and CNFs, which enables one to produce highly flexible SWNT materials—advantageously without the need for bonding agents and at significantly lower costs compared to flexible SWNT materials. The method exploits SWNTs tendency to entangle together to form flexible films, using a small amount of SWNTs to wrap around and entangle the larger diameter MWNTs and CNFs together to form flexible films with highly beneficial mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties at a fraction of the cost of SWNT materials.

  • Publication number: 20080222087
Abstract: An cost based optimizer optimizes access to at least a portion of hierarchically-organized documents, such as those formatted using eXtensible Markup Language (XML), by estimating a number of results produced by the access of the hierarchically-organized documents. Estimating the number of results comprises computing the cardinality of each operator executing query language expressions and further computing a sequence size of sequences of hierarchically-organized nodes produced by the query language expressions. Access to the hierarchically-organized documents is optimized using the structure of the query expression and/or path statistics involving the hierarchically-organized data. The cardinality and the sequence size are used to calculate a cost estimation for execution of alternate query execution plans. Based on the cost estimation, an optimal query execution plan is selected from among the alternate query execution plans.

  • Publication number: 20070043696
Abstract: Provided is a method for modeling the cost of XML as well as relational operators. As with traditional relational cost estimation, a set of system catalog statistics that summarizes the XML data is exploited; however, the novel use of a set of simple path statistics is also proposed. A new statistical learning technique called transform regression is utilized instead of detailed analytical models to predict the overall cost of an operator. Additionally, a query optimizer in a database is enabled to be self-tuning, automatically adapting to changes over time in the query workload and in the system environment.

  • Publication number: 20070012856
Abstract: An auto-eject foot stand assembly with multi-viewing angles for a visual device includes a foot having an axle perpendicular to the foot. The axle rotatably extends in a bracket. A gear is securely provided outside the axle and between the bracket and the foot. A spring is provided between the gear and the bracket. An elasticity plate is engaged with the gear. A locker is pivotally mounted on the bracket and operated by a metal spring plate to lock the gear. When the metal spring plate is pressed, the gear is released from the locker and the foot can be ejected under the elastic force of the spring. By the engagement between the gear and elasticity plate, the foot can be rotated and positioned at various desired viewing angels.
