  • Publication number: 20200050075
Abstract: A switchable light-collimating film can be used as a privacy filter for computer monitors or other display devices. The film comprises a plurality of elongated chambers having pigment particles, the position of which can be controlled by the applied electric field. Distribution of the pigment particles throughout the elongated chambers, as opposed to their concentration on one side of the chambers, narrows the viewing angle to the light passing through the film and provides privacy of the viewing images to the user.

  • Publication number: 20200050010
Abstract: A light-collimating film including elongated chambers of bistable electrophoretic fluids. The light-collimating films are suitable to control the amount and/or direction of light incident to a transmissive substrate. Such films may be integrated into devices, such as LCD displays, to provide a zone of privacy for a user viewing the LCD display. Because the light-collimating film is switchable, it allows a user to alter the collimation of the emitted light on demand. Because the films are bistable, they do not require additional power after they have been switched to a display state.

  • Publication number: 20190378465
Abstract: A color display device in which each pixel can display four high-quality color states. More specifically, an electrophoretic fluid is provided which comprises four types of particles, dispersed in a solvent or solvent mixture, wherein each type of particle has a different charge profile (polarity and magnitude) and a different optical characteristic. When driven with a two-step process, the particles of lower charge magnitude can be driven to the viewing surface while the particles with higher charge magnitude are not viewable at the viewing surface.

  • Patent number: 10504457
Abstract: The present invention is directed to methods of passively driving an electrophoretic display. The electrophoretic fluid comprises three types of particles wherein two types particles are charged pigment particles having opposite charge polarities and contrasting colors. The third type of particle is larger in diameter than the first and second types of particles, and is less charged than the first and second types of particles, i.e., the third particle type is substantially uncharged. The electrophoretic medium is driven with two sets of electrodes, each set comprising a number of addressable electrodes.

  • Publication number: 20190339563
Abstract: The present invention is directed to display devices comprising a watermark area and a non-watermark area. The display cells in the watermark area have widths of the partition walls, heights of the partition walls, top opening shapes or display cell sizes which are different from those of the display cells in the non-watermark area. The watermark aims to protect against counterfeiting or to be used for decoration purposes. The watermark is visible at certain viewing angles and/or under certain lighting conditions and it does not interfere with displaying of the regular images.

  • Patent number: 10401668
Abstract: A display device comprises a layer of display cells separated from each other by partition walls and filled with a display fluid. The display of the invention is divided into a non-watermark area and a watermark area, the latter forming a watermark. The watermark aims to protect against counterfeiting or to be used for decoration purposes. The watermark is visible at certain viewing angles and/or under certain lighting conditions and it does not interfere with displaying of the regular images. For example, each of the display cells in the watermark area may have a different size from each of the display cells in the non-watermark area. Alternatively, the watermark area differs from the non-watermark area in at least one parameter selected from partition wall height, partition wall width and the shape of each display cell, and the watermark area is divided into at least two parts having differing values of the parameter.

  • Publication number: 20190179209
Abstract: The present invention provides driving methods for electrophoretic color display devices. The backplane system used for the driving methods is found to be simpler which renders color display devices more cost effective. More specifically, the driving method comprises first driving all pixels towards a color state by modulating only the common electrode, followed by driving all pixels towards their desired color states by maintaining the common electrode grounded and applying different voltages to the pixel electrodes.
