  • Patent number: 8194695
Abstract: A communication terminal and method is provided for improving channel utilization efficiency in a wireless sensor network using contention-based channel access mechanism is disclosed. The communication method according to the present invention comprises initializing, when a packet transmission is required, a contention window to a size; resetting, when a channel is assessed to be busy, the size of the contention window in a hybrid expansion mode; and attempting, when the channel is assessed to be idle, the packet transmission through the channel.

  • Publication number: 20120104295
Abstract: A device for controlling an actuator includes an input interface that receives a plurality of input signals including a setpoint command signal and a feedback signal. An output interface provides a drive signal to the actuator. First, second, and third redundant loop controllers processes the setpoint command signal and the feedback signal to generate respective actuator control signals. A primary controller compares the actuator control signals to determine whether at least two are substantially similar. The device outputs the drive signal to the actuator according to an actuator control signals that has been determined by the primary controller to be substantially similar to another. Any one of the redundant loop controllers is hot swappable with a replacement loop controller such that loop controller redundancy is operatively maintained by the device in controlling the actuator while one of the redundant loop controllers is hot swapped.

  • Publication number: 20110282936
Abstract: A smart network may include a smart network host device as well as one or more client devices configured to connect to the smart network. Each of the client devices may implement one or more services that the client device exposes to other devices connected to the smart network. Each of the client devices includes network layer 2 and 3 attributes as well as network layer 7 application attributes. The application attributes are enumerated as named services, which each client device registers with the smart network host device. When a client device needs access to a named service, the smart network host device uses layer 2, 3, and 7 attributes associated with the client device to select a suitable server for providing the named service to the client device.

Each of the client devices may implement one or more services that the client device exposes to other devices connected to the smart network. A client device configured to connect to the smart network may implement one or more modules configured to facilitate connecting to the smart network, registering the client device or services running on the client device with the smart network, diagnosing issues with the client device or the smart network, and upgrading the firmware of the client device. The client device may be configured to perform the various operations with minimal input from an owner of the smart network.

  • Patent number: 7289707
Abstract: A low-noise, high-gain optical image amplifier includes a multi-mode pump source that injects optical energy into an active fiber's inner cladding to excite the dopant ions in a 2-D array of doped cores and provide gain. The cores are arranged to sample and collect light from an image incident on one end of the fiber, amplify the light and output an amplified pixilated image at the other end of the fiber. The multi-core active fiber preserves the spatial pattern and spectrum of the incident image. The cores may be configured as single-mode cores to preserve phase information or multi-mode cores to scramble the phase information. It is often desirable for the gain to be approximately uniform across the 2-D array. This can be achieved by pumping uniformly doped cores into their respective saturation regions.

  • Patent number: 7221528
Abstract: Magnetic alignment marks are recorded on a recording surface of a magnetic hard disk to mark the location where the disk is abutted against the hub of the spindle of a multiple-disk servo-writer. The alignment marks for each recording surface may be different so as to distinguish between top and bottom disk surfaces so that when the discs are assembled onto the spindle of a disk drive they may be assembled with the proper orientation, i.e., the top surface is mounted “up.” The marks may be large, low frequency patterns that are both written and detected by non contact means other than the servo-track writer's or the disk drive's heads.

  • Publication number: 20060266211
Abstract: In a variable displacement type hydraulic pump/motor assembly including at least one internally movable component, such as a yoke, a swashplate, and the means for moving the swashplate, the improvement includes imparting on this component absolute location indicia markings and the addition of an optical/electronic sensor unit capable of reading such indicia markings fixedly located on a housing of the pump/motor assembly and including an optical read head extending into the housing interior and located at a spaced distance from the indicia markings for reading same, relative to a reference location, and producing a signal indicative of the absolute position of the movable component. The signal can then, in turn, be used for controlling the displacement of the pump/motor assembly. A method for determining the absolute component position is also set forth.
