  • Publication number: 20030161263
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selectively accelerating network communications provides improved operation of network communications through channels with long delays, such as a satellite communications channel. A configuration management mechanism provides a selection of acceleration configuration for particular addresses of devices that may communicate through the communications channels. Acceleration may be bypassed for particular addresses or classes of devices within the network and priorities may be assigned, permitting a cut-off of acceleration when a threshold number of sessions is reached. The method and system may also allow a higher priority class of session to preempt lower priority session by removing resources from the lower priority session and assigning them to the higher priority session. The data rate of the lower priority session is then lowered (due to the absence of acceleration or reduced buffer size) to reduce traffic flow.

  • Publication number: 20030036163
Abstract: Novel PN9826 protein and nucleic acids encoding PN9826 are provided. PN9826-containing protein complexes formed by PN9826 and a PN9826-interacting protein (e.g., LTBP1) are also provided. LTBP1 and PN9826 may be involved in common biological processes such as angiogenesis, metastasis, and cell growth and adhesion. Thus, the protein complexes as well as PN9826 can be used in screening assays to select modulators of PN9826 and the protein complexes formed by PN9826 and LTBP1. The identified modulators can be useful in modulating the functions and activities of PN9826 and protein complexes containing PN9826.

  • Publication number: 20030005147
Abstract: A network system with a STAR topology allows single hop connectivity between sites. The system has a hub site and a plurality of remote sites. A first channel is used for sending data from the hub site to all of the plurality of remote sites. A plurality of second channels are used for transmitting data from each of the plurality of remote sites to the hub site and for transmitting data between the plurality of remote sites. In the system, call control and management between the hub site and the remote sites and between different remote sites use Internet protocol (IP) addressing for identification.

  • Publication number: 20020080799
Abstract: Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) data is transmitted in Available Bit Rate (ABR) service over a network path including a spacecraft. The spacecraft payload switches do not provide an indication of congestion, so conventional ABR feedback control using Resource Management cells is ineffective. In one avatar of the invention, the Network Control Center coacting with the spacecraft produces signals representative of congestion in services other than ATM ABR service, and these congestion signals are coupled to the terrestrial source terminal, where return or back Resource Management cells are modified with data derived from the congestion signals, to close a feedback loop including the source of ATM ABR signals, the source terminal, and the spacecraft. The feedback loop tends to maintain excess bandwidth in use for ABR purposes, and tends to prevent congestion.

  • Patent number: 6347973
Abstract: A stick-propelled loop game is presented. Fundamentally, the invention includes an annular loop characterized by a central opening therein. The loop is caused to fly through the air or bounce against the ground and is retrieved therefrom by means of a stick fashioned with a bulbous knob at the end which is insertable into the opening. The knob on the stick allows the player of the game to spin the loop while in his possession utilizing the centrifugal force of the loop against the stick. The central opening and the outside circumference of the loop are formed of a rubber like substance applied over a flexible material, such as plastic tubing. These materials allow the loop to possess sufficient mass and flexibility to allow the loop to be propelled through the air or bounced against the ground.

  • Patent number: 5713250
Abstract: Apparatus for assembling fasteners includes a fastening wrench operated by a first operator and having interchangeable sockets of different sizes for engaging nuts of different sizes. The nuts are required to be tightened to different torque values on their respective bolts. When the first operator removes a socket from a socket tray in preparation for attaching the socket to the fastening wrench, a signal is sent to a controller which determines the torque value associated with that socket size. When the fastening wrench reaches the specified torque value during the tightening operation, the controller automatically shuts the fastening wrench off. The apparatus also includes a second wrench, operated by a second operator, for engaging the heads of the bolts to prevent them from turning during the tightening process. During the tightening process the second operator may not be in communication with the first operator.
