Patent number: 5841541Abstract: The invention is a method and apparatus for measuring the dimensions of a parcel. The invention begins by placing a parcel in the corner of a field of measurement upon a flat surface and against two adjacent walls. At the base of each wall, and along the angle where the adjacent walls meet, is a calibrated reflective strip. The calibration marks on each of the reflective strips are of known size and spacing. One or more sensors are activated and read the number of visible calibrated marks. The one or more sensors transmits this data to a processor which calculates the measurement for the length, width, and height of the parcel by subtracting the observed visible calibration marks from the number of possible calibration marks. If the flat surface, upon which the parcel has been placed is the weighing surface of a scale, then weight for the parcel can be determined. Each of the then calculated dimensions (length, width, height, and weight) can then be displayed and/or transmitted to a parcel processing system.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1996Date of Patent: November 24, 1998Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: Daniel F. Patent number: 5815274Abstract: The invention is a method and apparatus for measuring the dimensions of a parcel for use in a parcel processing application. The invention includes the placing of a parcel on a weighing scale. A movably mounted emitter apparatus projects lines of a known distance apart onto the parcel so that the number of lines may be counted by a scanner to determine a first linear dimension of the placed parcel. After the first count is performed, the emitter apparatus is rotated in place 90.sub.-- so as to project a second set of lines on the first surface of the placed parcel. The second set of lines is then counted so as to determine a second linear dimension of the placed parcel. After the second count is performed, the emitter apparatus is moved so as to project a third set of lines on a second surface of the parcel, wherein the second surface is perpendicular to the first surface. The third set of lines is counted to determine the third linear dimension of the placed parcel.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1996Date of Patent: September 29, 1998Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: Daniel F. Patent number: 5808912Abstract: The invention is a method for measuring the dimensions of a parcel through point determination which is initiated by placing a parcel on a weighing scale within a field of measurement which comprises a first known spatial relationship. In a preferred embodiment, an ultrasonic emitter is positioned at the outermost corner of the parcel. A sensor is placed on a line along each of the three axes ending at the outermost corner of the parcel; the lines representing the length, width, and height of the parcel and comprising the second known spatial relationship. The emitter transmits a pulse to the sensors. Each of the lines is then measured by determining a length of time from emission of the pulse to reception of the pulse by the sensors.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1996Date of Patent: September 15, 1998Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventors: Daniel F. Patent number: 5777746Abstract: The invention is a method and apparatus for measuring the dimensions of a parcel. The invention begins by placing a parcel in a corner of a field of measurement comprising a flat surface which is preferably a weighing scale, and meeting two upright adjacent walls; each of the walls have at their base a corresponding calibrated reflective strip. A laser scanner emitter is activated and directs a beam toward a rotating polygonal mirror, so as to deflect the beam towards a parabola which further deflects the beam across the reflective strip of the first wall, across the parcel, and then across the second wall. The beam is reflected from the reflective tape back toward the parabola and, back toward the polygonal mirror and on to the emitter scanner. Upon receiving the returned beam, the emitter scanner will record a pattern of reflected light which is demonstrative of the location of the parcel within the field of measurement.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1996Date of Patent: July 7, 1998Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: Daniel F. Patent number: 5770864Abstract: The invention is a method and apparatus for measuring the dimensions of a parcel. The method comprises a series of steps utilizing the apparatus for determining each of the relevant dimensions of the parcel. The steps begin with the placing of a parcel on a flat surface in a field of measurement; the flat surface can be the weighing surface of a scale for calculating the parcel weight. A laser scanner is positioned and then rotated within its position so as to locate the lead and trail edges of the parcel, the left and right sides, and the top and bottom edges. The positioning data is then transmitted to a data processor which calculates the length, width, and height of the parcel. A conveyor belt for transporting the parcel to the measurement field can be utilized. A laser beam is transmitted toward a mirror so that the parcel must pass the mirror while the parcel is on the conveyor belt.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1996Date of Patent: June 23, 1998Assignee: Pitney Bowes Inc.Inventor: Daniel F.
