    Abstract: In real-world environments, transient objects, such as moving cars, people, or temporary obstructions, can significantly impact the accuracy and performance of augmented reality (AR) systems. Traditional AR systems struggle to detect and remove transient objects, which may lead to computational inefficiencies and poor user experiences. The disclosed approach to 3D mapping identifies and eliminates transient objects from the generated maps. This may improve the overall usability of AR applications by providing a more stable, clutter-free augmented experience. Further, the proposed approach for generating 3D maps that do not include transient objects may reduce computational costs and inefficiencies when generating AR experiences by reducing the computational resources necessary to identify and account for changes in the environment represented by the 3D map at run time of the AR experiences.

    Abstract: A system performs polygon mesh generation with a variable-resolution truncated signed distance function (TSDF) grid. The system receives image data capturing a real-world environment and captured by a camera assembly of a client device. The system applies a depth estimation model to each frame to output a depth map. The system applies a semantic segmentation model to each frame to output a segmentation mask. The system determines level hints for each frame based on the segmentation mask and the depth map. The level hints indicate a voxel resolution level per pixel of the frame. The system generates a variable-resolution truncated signed distance function (TSDF) grid by fusing depth predictions from the depth maps. The variable-resolution TSDF grid includes voxels at different resolution levels. The system extracts a mesh from the grid digitally representing surfaces in the real-world environment. The mesh may be augmented with patterns from the image data.

    Abstract: An online computing system generates and uses usability heatmaps to ensure that AR content is presented in suitable locations within geographic areas. To generate a usability heatmap, the online system accesses geographic data describing a geographic area for which the online system provides AR content services and identifies a set of portions of the geographic area. The online system identifies subsets of the geographic data for each of the portions of the geographic area and computes a usability score for each of the portions. The online system generates a usability heatmap based on the computed usability scores for the portions of the geographic area and stores the heatmap in a heatmap database that stores usability heatmaps for different geographic areas. The online system may use the heatmaps in the database to generate AR content when requested by client devices.
