Patent number: 10694288Abstract: A user device can be used to correct for a latency of a speaker. The user device can communicate an indication to the speaker to play a sound at a first time. The user device can record a second time at which a microphone on the user device detects the sound. The first and second times can be synchronized to a clock of a computer network. The user device can compare the first and second times to determine a latency of the speaker. The user device can communicate adjustment data corresponding to the determined latency to the speaker. The speaker can use the adjustment data to correct for the determined latency. In some examples, the user device can display instructions to position the user device a specified distance from the speaker, and can account for a time-of-flight of sound to propagate along the specified distance.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 2019Date of Patent: June 23, 2020Assignee: DTS, Inc.Inventor: Dannie Lau

Publication number: 20190342659Abstract: A user device can be used to correct for a latency of an audio chain, which extends inclusively between an input and a speaker. The user device can communicate an indication to the speaker to play a sound at a first time, and record a second time at which a microphone on the user device detects the sound. The user device can compare the first and second times to determine a latency of the audio chain. The user device can communicate adjustment data corresponding to the determined latency to a component in the audio chain. Publication number: 20180357037Abstract: When the volume is adjusted in a multi-speaker system, it is desirable that one speaker does not change volume disproportionately with respect to another speaker. A method is presented for adjusting a volume level of one or more speakers. Each speaker can have a non-standardized relationship between logical volume level that is input to the speaker and sound pressure level that is produced by the speaker. A selected volume level, corresponding to a sound pressure level, can be received via a user interface. A stored lookup table can be accessed to convert the sound pressure level to a first product-specific logical volume level for each speaker. The stored lookup table can tabulate the non-standardized relationship between logical volume level and sound pressure level for each speaker. Data corresponding to the first product-specific logical volume level can be transmitted to each speaker.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 8, 2017Publication date: December 13, 2018Inventor: Dannie Lau

Publication number: 20120099594Abstract: A wired and wireless media transport technology is provided that allows for the simultaneous transmission of media to multiple zones while maintaining precise timing synchronization. A user can have a network of speakers, and independently select which ones are actively playing and have their playback synchronized. The media source can be a cell phone, tablet, stereo, set-top box, PC or other device. The media itself can be audio or video. The transmission method of media into the network can be wired, as through an auxiliary cable, or wireless as with Bluetooth or WiFi. The speakers/endpoints themselves are governed in a self-forming network. Audio is injected into the network from a source and the end-point network itself controls audio/video distribution, timing, and rendering.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 21, 2011Publication date: April 26, 2012Applicant: PHORUS LLCInventors: Dannie Lau, Chun Ho Lee

Patent number: 7788600Abstract: A graphical user interface for use in connection with a multifunction device is set forth. In one example, the multifunction device includes navigation and media functionality. The exemplary graphical user interface comprises a navigation interface, a media interface, and a source menu display. The source menu screen includes at least a first button actuatable by the user to invoke display of a screen corresponding to a previously stored navigation interface state, and at least a second button actuatable by the user to invoke display of a screen corresponding to a previously stored media interface state. There is at least one source button disposed for actuation on a plurality of screens of the navigation interface and a plurality of screens of the media interface to invoke display of the source menu to the user. Actuation of the at least one source button results in storage of a currently active interface state. In one example, one or more of the buttons of the interface are virtual buttons.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2007Date of Patent: August 31, 2010Assignee: Harman International Industries, IncorporatedInventors: Dannie Lau, Darren Kelly O'Brien
