The server also includes a hardware device coupled to the motherboard and the programmable logic device. The server further includes a non-volatile memory storing firmware for the hardware device. The non-volatile memory is coupled to the motherboard and the programmable logic device. The server further includes a peripheral device coupled to the motherboard and the programmable logic device. The peripheral device receives firmware data from a management server. The peripheral device verifies that the firmware data corresponds to the hardware device. The peripheral device further holds the hardware device in reset mode. The peripheral device stores the firmware data on the non-volatile memory to update the firmware and releases the hardware device from reset mode after updating the firmware.

    Abstract: Calibrating a battery capacity gage employs a controlled discharge of a backup battery unit. A method of updating a capacity gage includes charging a backup battery unit to a predetermined high charge level. A first amount of energy is discharged from the backup battery unit at a first controlled discharge rate so as to discharge the backup battery unit from the predetermined high charge level to a first low charge level. The backup battery unit is charged back to the predetermined high charge level. A power system controller estimates, based on the first amount of energy and the first controlled discharge rate, a second amount of energy that can be discharged from the backup battery unit at a second controlled discharge rate greater than the first controlled discharge rate. The capacity gage is updated based on the second amount of energy estimated by the power system controller.

    Abstract: Systems for controlling cycling operations for backup battery units in a datacenter include groups of backup battery units and power supply units that can supply power to datacenter components from either a primary power supply or, the backup battery units. Each group of multiple battery units has sufficient capacity to provide backup power to a respective electronic device even when one battery unit is offline. In operation, a controller receives requests to perform cycling operations, e.g. maintenance, on the backup batteries. Upon each request, the system retrieves status information corresponding to each backup battery unit and determines whether the remainder of the backup battery units can supply sufficient power to meet or exceed power demand, and either allow or prevent each backup battery unit from performing the cycling operation in response to determining whether the remainder of the backup battery units can or cannot supply sufficient power.

The adapter device and/or the programmable security logic can verify the firmware in the non-volatile memory while holding the processor and/or a baseboard management controller (BMC) in power reset, release the processor and the BMC from reset to boot the processor and the BMC after the firmware is verified, and then disable communications between the processor and the BMC and deny at least some requests to write to the non-volatile memory by the processor or the BMC.

    Abstract: Technologies are provided for dynamically changing a size of a cache region of a storage device. A storage device controller writes data to the cache region of the storage device using a particular storage format. The storage device controller then migrates the cached data to a storage region of the device, where the data is written using a different storage format. A dynamic cache manager monitors input and output activity for the storage device and dynamically adjusts a size of the cache region to adapt to changes in the input and/or output activity. The dynamic cache manager can also adjust a size of the storage region. The storage device controller can automatically detect that the storage device has dynamic cache support and configure the storage device by creating the cache region and the storage region on the device.

    Abstract: A rack-mountable computer system directs separate portions of a cooling airflow from an inlet air plenum in the computer system interior through separate air passages to remove heat from separate portions of a set of heat-producing components. The air passages can preclude a portion of cooling airflow removing heat from a component from being preheated by another component. Plenums and air passages can be established through the arrangement of components in the interior. Components can be arranged in progressive offsets throughout the depth of the interior to vary plenum flow area throughout the depth, which can progressively impede and redirect airflow through the inlet plenum into the air passages. Arrangements can include an angled row, a staggered configuration, etc. The computer system can include a chassis which can translate, while maintaining operation of hot-pluggable electronic components coupled throughout the depth, to enable swapping of hot-pluggable electronic components throughout the interior.

Each server may include a custom, non-standard sized physical memory module containing memory devices of multiple technologies, types, or sizes on the same printed circuit board. By including custom memory modules, rather than relying only on standard memory modules, the service provider system may implement virtual machines having finer grained options for processor and memory capacity combinations, and may avoid stranding rentable resources.
