  • Publication number: 20030153844
Abstract: Assemblies are provided for collecting a sample from a mouth using an integrated sample collection tip. A sample collection assembly includes a sample collection body configured for being placed within the mouth, wherein the sample collection body includes a bore and one or more pores. The sample collection assembly further includes a conduit that disposed within the bore of the sample collection body and that is in fluid communication with the one or more pores. The conduit is bonded within the bore. The sample collection assembly can further include a hand piece that has a tip on which the sample collection body is mounted, and through which the conduit can extend. For example, the rear surface of the sample collection body can be bonded to the front surface of the sample collection tip. The pores can include a plurality of micropores. The sample collection body can be hydrophobic, and a hydrophilic surfactant can be disposed on the outer surface of the sample collection body.

  • Patent number: 6293335
Abstract: A tube and shell heat exchanger having a transversely oriented inlet port and a spirally coiled heat transfer tube contained within an arcuate chamber created by an internal baffle in which the water to be conditioned travels along a helical pathway in which the flow has minimized water depth and high turbulence. The tube and shell heat exchanger maximizes heat transfer capability in a relatively easy to assemble design to make feasible the use of a higher cost material for the tubing such as titanium in a wide range of applications.

  • Patent number: 5477422
Abstract: A back-lit LCD apparatus comprises a LCD (1), one or more LEDs (3) (or other light sources), and a plate-like light guide (2) behind the LCD (1). An attenuating member (5) is included in front or behind the light guide (5). In the former case the attenuating member (5) is formed as a sheet of reflective material on which is printed a pattern of non-reflective dots for reducing the intensity of light reaching portions of the LCD nearest to the light source. In the latter case the attenuating member (5) is transparent and the dots are either opaque or reflective. The size and frequency of the dots may be varied to adjust the level of attenuation. Also, the pattern of dots may be graduated to provide progressively less attenuation as the distance from the LEDs increases.
