  • Publication number: 20100045119
Abstract: A system for generating electrical energy from ambient energy such as the energy of ambient motion and acoustic vibrations. The system has at least two stages, a resonating electrical generator and a kinetic energy conversion system. The stages have differing resonant frequencies to enable harvesting energy from lower frequency ambient motion and converting the energy to higher frequency resonant oscillation for efficiently generating electrical energy. A multiaxial system having a plurality of systems for generating electrical energy from ambient motion each oriented to be responsive to motion along a different axis. An embodiment of a system for generating electrical energy from ambient motion for which the resonating electrical generator is at least part of a driving mass of the kinetic energy conversion system.

  • Publication number: 20090311456
Abstract: A self-wrapping, non-woven sleeve for routing and protecting elongate members includes a non-woven elongate wall having an outer surface with opposite sides extending along a longitudinal axis of the sleeve. The sides self-wrap about the longitudinal axis to provide a tubular cavity in absence of an externally applied force. The sides are extendable away from one another under an externally applied force to expose the cavity for insertion of the elongate members, wherein the sides return to their self-wrapped configuration upon removal of the externally applied force. Further, an outer reflective layer is attached to the outer surface of the self-wrapping wall to provide enhanced thermal protection to the elongate members in the cavity.

  • Publication number: 20090272238
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a structure for an improved screw driver having a torquing member. The screw driver having a handle end and a working end. The working end is adapted to turn screws. The handle end having openings adapted to receive the torquing member. The opening being generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. In one embodiment, the torquing member has an elongated member extending from the handle through the opening and having a second end. A secondary handle member is attached to the second end for assisting to apply torque to the screw driver while turning screws.

  • Patent number: 7603904
Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining a characteristic, such as the stiffness, of a portion of a wood specimen characterised by the steps of a) producing an acoustic signal in the wood specimen part way along the length of the wood specimen, and b) sensing a response in the wood specimen part way along the length of the wood specimen including a reverberation from a first end of the wood specimen, and c) calculating a characteristic of a portion of the wood specimen from analysis of the sensed response. A related method and apparatus may be used to determine a characteristic of a portion of a tree stem during harvesting of a tree and the characteristic used to optimise the value of a log cut from the stem.

  • Publication number: 20090250095
Abstract: An apparatus for distribution of light across a target area has at least one non-shadowing lens. The non-shadowing lens has a plurality of prisms wherein each prism provides an approximately uniform distribution of light across a defined area of the target area to reduce a shadowing effect. The apparatus may further have a tracking mechanism attached to the at least one non-shadowing lens for orienting the at least one non-shadowing lens towards a source of the light.

  • Publication number: 20090233043
Abstract: This invention relates to flexible structures (401) that respond to the application of an agent. Upon application of the agent, the flexible structure bends (402) in a predetermined fashion. The flexible structure is formed from a polymer liquid crystal that is orientated to define an upper surface layer and a lower surface layer having an essentially different molecule orientation, and the polymer liquid crystal is such that a length/width ration is changed upon application of the agent. Thereby, the upper and lower surface layers respond differently to the application of the agent, resulting in bending or un-bending of the flexible structure (401).

Abstract: A multilayer textile sleeve and method of construction thereof is provided. The sleeve has an outer layer constructed at least in part from a first warp yarn extending along a length direction of the sleeve and a weft yarn extending transversely to the length direction. The sleeve further includes an inner layer constructed at least in part from a second warp yarn extending along the length direction and a weft yarn extending transversely to the length direction, with the second warp yarn being a different type of yarn than the first warp yarn. The outer layer and inner layer are connected to one another by interlinking the weft yarn of the outer layer with at least some of the second warp yarns of the inner layer and by interlinking the weft yarn of the inner layer with at least some of the first warp yarns of the outer layer.

  • Publication number: 20090188354
Abstract: A dual handled, single throttle trigger trimmer comprising rotating handles and a rotating trimmer head. The rotating handles allow the use of the trimmer in a trimming mode and an edging mode. The device may be readily converted between the two modes and the lawn care worker must not remove either hand from the device while doing so. The conversion is accomplished by rotating the trimmer upper handle about an axis perpendicular to the trimmer driveshaft while simultaneously rotating the trimmer middle handle about an axis parallel to the trimmer driveshaft. The middle handle has a slide fit around the trimmer driveshaft.
