  • Patent number: 7002558
Abstract: The present invention relates to switching modes of an input device based on events. The invention detects events that suggest that the user does not want to continue with a present mode of the input device and switches to another operation mode. The detection and response to user inputs simplifies the user's interactions with the system. In some embodiments, the user may be asked prior to switching modes for confirmation. The present invention may be used with limited input devices including styluses.

  • Publication number: 20060033929
Abstract: The invention provides a novel method for absolute fringe order identification in multi-wavelength interferometry based on optimum selection of the wavelengths to be used. A theoretical model of the process is described which allows the process reliability to be quantified. The methodology produces a wavelength selection which is optimum with respect to the minimum number of wavelengths required to achieve a target dynamic measurement range. Conversely, the maximum dynamic range is produced from a given number of optimally selected wavelengths utilised in a sensor. The new concept introduced for optimum wavelength selection is scalable, i.e. from a three wavelength system to a four wavelength system, from four wavelengths to five, etc.

  • Patent number: 6996817
Abstract: A method and system for versioning of applications is provided. A version of an application may be updated or rolled back transparently to the client. A list of resources in a current version of an application is created and compared to the list of resources in a new version. When a resource is not included in the current version but is included in the new version, a notation is made to include the resource in the new version. When an extra resource is in the current version but not in the new version, a notation is made to purge the resource so that it is not included in the new version. These notations may be created in a purge list used by the client to request the resources needed to change versions. No interaction is needed by the client to change versions.

  • Publication number: 20060022263
Abstract: A vertical conduction semiconductor die has a top surface which receives a semiconductor junction pattern and a top electrode and a bottom surface with a bottom electrode. The bottom surface has one or more reduced thickness areas therein formed by selective etching or laser abrasion or the like to reduce the vertical conduction path length beneath at least portions of the semiconductor junction pattern and the bottom electrode to reduce the device RDSON. Thickened die portions remain to strengthen the die or wafer against breakage during handling. The full wafer thickness may be reduced before the local reduced thickness portions are formed.

  • Patent number: 6988574
Abstract: The present invention describes an opening for engine compartment cooling. The opening includes a one-way valve that permits airflow only at speed. The valve allows cooling air to circulate past the engine without impeding the efficiency of the radiator. The size, shape and number of openings and valves may vary depending on cooling capacity or styling considerations. The opening includes a leading edge followed by an indentation defining a port for a one-way valve. A valve is fixed in the port so that airflow can occur only in one direction.

  • Publication number: 20050276343
Abstract: A method for enhancing the bit rate and/or margin at which quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) communication is performed over multiple bands of a communication link includes the steps of varying a spectral allocation and constellation size with which communication is performed, so as to define a combination of spectral allocation and constellation size at which the bit rate and/or margin are enhanced. The rate adaptation method identifies the spectral allocation and constellation size to use on each of the multiple bands that results in a total bit rate greater than or equal to the target bit rate, subject to specified constraints on SNR margin and/or BER limits. If more than one parameter set has this property, the rate adaptation method may for example select the spectral allocation and constellation size combination that maximizes the minimum SNR margin across the multiple bands.

  • Publication number: 20050249040
Abstract: The apparatus has a sensor disposed on the first end of an elongate connector by means of fixed interface link. A recorder unit is disposed on the second end of the connector opposite the first end. The connector is bendable within a predefined curvature range. When the apparatus is deployed into the sea, it is adapted to free-fall through the body of water and to land on the seafloor such that the sensor is spaced apart from the recorder unit. The apparatus is additionally adapted to substantially vibrationally de-couple the sensor from the recorder unit. The length of the connector is dynamically variable within a predefined range so as to minimise vibration coupling between the recorder unit to the sensor. Physical separation of the sensor and the recorder unit, together with the mechanical characteristics of the connector, ensure that the sensor is substantially vibrationally de-coupled from the recorder unit.

  • Publication number: 20050245440
Abstract: New methods of screening for compounds for treating colon cancer are described. Using microarray expression profiling, molecular evidence was obtained supporting lack of differentiation as the mechanism for development of colon polyps and tumors. An absence of retinoic acid (RA) response genes from neoplastic tissue colon tissues was observed. The absence of RA response genes was paralleled by the lack of expression of retinol dehydrogenase 5 and a novel retinol dehydrogenase homolog, RDHL. RDHL expression is highly restricted to normal colon and the colon specific transcription factors, cdx1 and cdx2 can regulate RDHL. Additionally, re-introduction of APC leads to re-expression of RDHL.
