Patent number: 8477066Abstract: A handheld electronic device, such as a GPS-enabled wireless communications device with an embedded camera, a GPS-enabled camera-phone or a GPS-enabled digital camera, determines whether ephemeris data needs to be obtained for geotagging digital photos taken with the device. By monitoring user activity with respect to the camera, such as activation of the camera, the device can begin pre-acquisition of a GPS position fix by obtaining needed ephemeris data before the photograph is actually taken. This GPS pre-acquisition improves the likelihood that a position fix (GPS lock) is achieved by the time the photo is taken (to enable immediate geotagging). Alternatively, the photo can be geotagged retroactively by appending the current location to the metadata tag associated with the digital photo. An optional acquisition status indicator can be displayed on a user interface of the device to indicate that a position fix is being obtained.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2012Date of Patent: July 2, 2013Assignee: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: Piotr Konrad Tysowski, Ngoc Bich Ngo, David Noel Vanden Heuvel

Publication number: 20130143420Abstract: The present invention is an electrical connector in which a substrate (such as a printed circuit board or PCB) includes a plurality of apertures (or vias) and some of those apertures are filled with two materials to improve the characteristics of the electrical interconnection. The preferred process of crating the filled vias includes the steps of plating the vias with an electrically-conductive material to create an electrically-conductive path between portions of the substrate and components associated with the substrate and partially filling the apertures, then filling at least a portion of the apertures or vias with a second or different filling material to seal at least apart of the electrically conductive path through the plating. The second filling material may be chosen to provide thermal compensation for the connection.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 2, 2011Publication date: June 6, 2013Inventors: David Noel Light, Dinesh Sundararajan Kalakkad, Peter Tho Nguyen

Publication number: 20120143397Abstract: An asset tracking system includes a central control station with an associated datastore for storing asset information. The stored information includes multiple unique identifiers, each identifier being associated with an asset tracking unit in the form of a mobile base station asset tracking unit or a beacon asset tracking unit. The two types of tracking unit are fitted to assets such as vehicles. The mobile base station asset tracking units include GPS modules and can determine their position, and can also communicate with the central control station. The beacon asset tracking units can communicate with the mobile base station asset tracking units via short range radio transmissions and their positions can thus be determined from the position of nearby mobile base station asset tracking units. The control station includes a communication module which can receive, over an existing communication network, location data messages from a mobile base station asset tracking unit fitted to a first asset.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 29, 2010Publication date: June 7, 2012Applicant: MIX TELEMATICS INTERNATIONAL (PROPRIETARY) LIMITEDInventors: Gavin John Mackay, Lloyd Allan Marshall, Richard David Noel Timm

Publication number: 20110190035Abstract: The technology provides methods and devices for enhancing user interface interactions on mobile devices. The technology includes accessing a plurality of data sets, each data set of the plurality of data sets having corresponding data items and selecting at least one data item characteristic for the corresponding data items. Metric information is calculated from the selected data item characteristics, the calculated metric information is aggregated for the corresponding data items and a value is assigned to each corresponding data item based on the aggregated metric information. A feature of at least one corresponding data item is modified based on the assigned value and a combined visualization of the modified data items accessed from the plurality of data sets is generated to display the modified data items. The combined visualization includes a data cloud of the data items accessed from the plurality of data sets.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 3, 2011Publication date: August 4, 2011Applicant: RESEARCH IN MOTION LIMITEDInventors: David Noel VANDEN HEUVEL, Wadih Jean SHAIB, Heloise Rose DOUCET

Publication number: 20110155711Abstract: A laser sensor to scan the weld joint either before welding begins as a pre-weld scanning operation or in real time during welding to provide adaptive control of the arc welding parameters. A “line” type laser sensor device projects a laser line within a fixed operating window. The line laser produces a reflective position of anything that the laser line “sees” within the operating window. By triangulation, the exact distance an object is from the laser can be measured at any point along the “line” of the laser. Certain parts of the weld bevel are targeted for measurement. The measurements are stored in an electronic storage medium and a data processor. The stored measurements and data processor are used in conjunction with automated welding equipment to adjust the welding parameters as required. Because the exact joint/weld geometry is then known for every portion of the weld, the welding equipment can then respond or “adapt” to variations in the weld joint between the work pieces.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 31, 2009Publication date: June 30, 2011Inventors: Thomas Edward Doyle, Clyde David Noel, Terry Louis Breaux, Tal Noah Yesso

Patent number: 7933611Abstract: Methods and devices for implementing subsystem or functional aspect restrictions on a wireless handheld communication device. Data defining geographical boundaries of a restricted operating area is stored on the device. The present position of the device is ascertained and a determination is made whether the device is located within the restricted operating area. A restriction on the subsystem or functional aspect is imposed when it is determined the device is within the restricted operating area. The subsystem or functional aspect restriction can be communicated to the device via a wireless communication network. Additionally, the restrictions and boundaries can be communicated to the device as part of an IT security policy.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 2006Date of Patent: April 26, 2011Assignee: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: Andrew Douglas Bocking, David Noel Vanden Heuvel, Thomas Leonard Trevor Plestid

Publication number: 20110084053Abstract: A narrow groove GMAW torch for thick section welding that addresses the problems of conventional welding torches. A main body portion has a power block with electrical, feed welding wire, water cooling, and shielding gas connections and a contact tip. A dielectric is attached to the main body portion and has a primary shield gas outlet. A gas shield attached to the dielectric defines an annulus between them that functions as a secondary gas shield. A diffusing gas outlet in the dielectric delivers shielding gas to the weld area. The contact tip attached to the power block is designed to receive and control the curvature of the feed welding wire.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 12, 2009Publication date: April 14, 2011Inventors: Thomas Edward Doyle, Terry Louis Breaux, Clyde David Noel, Paul Berbakov
