This GPS pre-acquisition improves the likelihood that a position fix (GPS lock) is achieved by the time the photo is taken (to enable immediate geotagging). Alternatively, the photo can be geotagged retroactively by appending the current location to the metadata tag associated with the digital photo. An optional acquisition status indicator can be displayed on a user interface of the device to indicate that a position fix is being obtained.

    Abstract: The present invention is an electrical connector in which a substrate (such as a printed circuit board or PCB) includes a plurality of apertures (or vias) and some of those apertures are filled with two materials to improve the characteristics of the electrical interconnection. The preferred process of crating the filled vias includes the steps of plating the vias with an electrically-conductive material to create an electrically-conductive path between portions of the substrate and components associated with the substrate and partially filling the apertures, then filling at least a portion of the apertures or vias with a second or different filling material to seal at least apart of the electrically conductive path through the plating. The second filling material may be chosen to provide thermal compensation for the connection.

    Abstract: An asset tracking system includes a central control station with an associated datastore for storing asset information. The stored information includes multiple unique identifiers, each identifier being associated with an asset tracking unit in the form of a mobile base station asset tracking unit or a beacon asset tracking unit. The two types of tracking unit are fitted to assets such as vehicles. The mobile base station asset tracking units include GPS modules and can determine their position, and can also communicate with the central control station. The beacon asset tracking units can communicate with the mobile base station asset tracking units via short range radio transmissions and their positions can thus be determined from the position of nearby mobile base station asset tracking units. The control station includes a communication module which can receive, over an existing communication network, location data messages from a mobile base station asset tracking unit fitted to a first asset.

    Abstract: A laser sensor to scan the weld joint either before welding begins as a pre-weld scanning operation or in real time during welding to provide adaptive control of the arc welding parameters. A “line” type laser sensor device projects a laser line within a fixed operating window. The line laser produces a reflective position of anything that the laser line “sees” within the operating window. By triangulation, the exact distance an object is from the laser can be measured at any point along the “line” of the laser. Certain parts of the weld bevel are targeted for measurement. The measurements are stored in an electronic storage medium and a data processor. The stored measurements and data processor are used in conjunction with automated welding equipment to adjust the welding parameters as required. Because the exact joint/weld geometry is then known for every portion of the weld, the welding equipment can then respond or “adapt” to variations in the weld joint between the work pieces.
