  • Publication number: 20100294448
Abstract: A process for molding recyclable, compostable, and disposable containers made of pulp paper is disclosed herein. The process includes disposing a wet pulp layer on a male or female mold, mating the mold with its counterpart, and applying a force on the pulp layer to remove moisture and thin the pulp. The process continues by applying a vacuum to either the male or female mold to hold the pulp layer, and removing the other mold. The process further comprises sequentially mating male and female molds until the pulp layer is the desired thickness and shape of the container. Embodiments of the process may include molding pulp containers to include pleats, stability features, reverse draft features, and puffed pulp configurations.

  • Publication number: 20080315451
Abstract: Methods for making a molded beverage container insulator from a slurry including water and a polysaccharide by presenting at least one male mold, which may have an elliptical cross section, therein and causing a portion of the slurry to temporarily adhere to the at least one mold. After a suitable period of time, removing the mold from the slurry and then removing the insulator. At such time, and particularly if the mold is not characterized as elliptical in cross section, the insulator is subject to bidirectional compression in order to collapse the same. Opposing hinge elements may be formed in the insulator, either at the time of molding or subsequently, to localize stresses resulting from the collapsing of the insulator. The resulting insulator is fully recyclable/compostable and possesses a constricting bias to mitigate container slip issues.

  • Publication number: 20070181591
Abstract: A biodegradable and recyclable paper internally fitted lid or closure which improves on current lids or closures. Embodiments of this invention provide an arrangement easier for the consumer to use as it is self “seating” and requires very little if any pressure to affix as gravity does most of the work. The internally fitted lid of one embodiment seals a larger area of the beverage container opening by relying on the matching the draft angle of wall of the internally fitted lid with the draft angle of the beverage container.

  • Publication number: 20060265873
Abstract: This invention relates to a tube finning machine (10) and to a method of use thereof. Typically, the finned tubes will be for use in heat exchangers. In the present invention, the machine (10) has tensioning means (32, 44) for applying tension to the tubes (16) during the finning process, tension in the tubes reducing the likelihood that the tubes will buckle or deform during the process. Also, the invention discloses the use of a solid material introduced between the fins (22) to support the fins during the finning process, the solid material being removed after completion of the process. The solid material can be a granular material, or it can be a continuous material introduced (and removed) in its liquid state.

  • Publication number: 20060199281
Abstract: Surfaces coated with a target-induced fluorescent compound are used to detect target elements, especially trace elements. The target-induced fluorescent compound does not fluoresce when excited at a specific wavelength until it has bound a target element. The use of these coated surfaces provides several benefits including reduced background for greater sensitivity and eliminating the need to separate target-induced fluorescent compound that has not bound target element from target-induced fluorescent compound that has bound target element. Coated nanoparticles are especially useful for detection of target elements.
