  • Publication number: 20040015041
Abstract: An actuation system for assisting the operation of the natural heart includes a framework for interfacing with a natural heart and which is coupled with tissue of the heart. An actuator element is adapted to be coupled to the framework and is configured for extending along a portion of a heart wall exterior surface. The actuator element is operable for deforming the portion of the heart wall to effect a reduction in the volume of the heart. A protective sheath is configured to extend along the heart wall between the actuator element and the heart wall portion for protecting the heart wall portion from damage by the actuator element. The protective sheath is flexible and operable to transmit, to the heart wall portion, a force thereon by the actuator element for indenting the heart wall portion.

Abstract: An actuation system for assisting the operation of a natural heart is disclosed. The actuation system includes a framework for interfacing with the natural heart and an actuator mechanism that can be coupled to the framework. The framework includes internal framework and external framework elements. The actuator mechanism is operable for deforming at least one framework element for varying the shape of the heart. The framework includes a set of interconnected, passive, intracardiac and extracardiac elements and their interconnections that deform, bend and/or twist in response to movements induced by the actuation system. Some or all of these elements, and the connections between them, are specifically intended to be flexible, in that they may be bent or twisted by means of motion induced by an associated mechanical actuation system.

  • Publication number: 20030208468
Abstract: A method, system and computer product for analyzing and monitoring business volume is provided. A database is linked with a database management utility. Business data is loaded on the database. The business data include data related to accounts, hierarchical account/product relationships, and hierarchical account/customer relationships. The database support relational data queries to the business data. A plurality of threshold changes is defined regarding the business data, and is associated with the database A plurality of threshold tests for detecting changes throughout a selected set of the business data is performed in accordance with the threshold change values. The results of the tests are combined to obtain a classification of data that produces business volume data. The business volume data permits the analysis and monitoring of flows of business into, out of and among account, customer and products groups of a business. The business volume data also provide customer behaviour data.

  • Patent number: 6592619
Abstract: An actuation system for assisting the operation of the natural heart comprises a framework for interfacing with a natural heart, through the wall of the heart, which includes an internal framework element configured to be positioned within the interior volume of a heart and an external framework element configured to be positioned proximate an exterior surface of the heart. The internal framework is flexibly suspended with respect to the external frame. An actuator system is coupled to the framework and configured to engage an exterior surface of the heart. The actuator system comprises an actuator band extending along a portion of a heart wall exterior surface. The actuator band is selectively movable between an actuated state and a relaxed state and is operable, when in the actuated state, to assume a predetermined shape and thereby indent a portion of the heart wall to effect a reduction in the volume of the heart.

  • Patent number: 6582375
Abstract: A system for studying a beating explanted heart comprises a fluid inflow circuit configured for coupling to an explanted heart to direct fluid for flowing into a ventricle of the heart, and a fluid outflow circuit configured for coupling to an explanted heart to direct fluid flowing out of the ventricle of the beating heart. A flow meter coupled with the inflow circuit measures the inflow rate of fluid into the heart ventricle and a flow meter coupled with the outflow circuit measures the outflow rate of fluid out of the heart ventricle. A processing system converts the inflow and outflow rates into incremental volume changes in the volume of the heart ventricle and adds and subtracts the incremental volume changes from a relative volume of the heart ventricle to study volume changes in the explanted heart while it is beating.

  • Publication number: 20030042677
Abstract: A dice-less Craps game is disclosed. The game may be played by dealing, by a dealer, a pair of cards having numerical indicia thereon; determining whether the pair of cards are of a like suit; if the cards are not of a like suit, then adding the numerical indicia together to determine a roll in accordance with the rules of Craps; and if the pair of cards are of a like suit, then arriving at a predetermined result other than a roll in accordance with the rules of Craps. In a further disclosed aspect, the first predetermined result comprises a NoCall. In a further disclosed aspect an apparatus for playing a dice-less Craps game is disclosed, comprising a deck of cards comprising 48 cards having numerical indicia thereon including four like-suited pairs each of Aces, Twos, Threes, Fours, Fives, and Sixes; and a Craps playing surface having additional indicia thereon for wagering on a predetermined result if a pair of dealt cards are of a like suit.

  • Publication number: 20020109207
Abstract: A process for forming a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) device by a deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) process during which a substrate overlying a cavity is etched to form trenches that breach the cavity to delineate suspended structures. A first general feature of the process is to define suspended structures with a DRIE process, such that the dimensions desired for the suspended structures are obtained. A second general feature is the proper location of specialized features, such as stiction bumps, vulnerable to erosion caused by the DRIE process. Yet another general feature is to control the environment surrounding suspended structures delineated by DRIE in order to obtain their desired dimensions. A significant problem identified and solved by the invention is the propensity for the DRIE process to etch certain suspended features at different rates.

  • Patent number: 6337916
Abstract: Image data representing a moving image by a sequence of image frames each containing an array of pixels. A distinctive characteristic of an image frame is identified and image data is modified in response to process iterations. For each iteration, a tracking parameter is generated (1504) and the rendering of said object is controlled (1506) in response to the tracking parameter. An output image is displayed in response to the application of the controlled object so that tracking and display operations are performed on a frame-by-frame basis to facilitate creative manipulation of control parameters and tracking locations.
