Patent number: 7424767Abstract: Provided is a street sweeper for collecting debris from a street surface. The street sweeper includes a chassis mounted on wheels, a rotating broom for removing debris from a street surface, and a hopper for collecting the removed debris. A passageway extends between the broom and the hopper to transfer the debris removed from the street surface. To remove debris from areas difficult to access with the rotating broom, the street sweeper also includes a litter hose connected to an air flow generating device that communicates with the hopper. The airflow generating device provides a suction force within the litter hose for removing debris and discharges that debris into the hopper. The airflow generating device and suction force work independently of the internal conditions of the hopper. In an embodiment, the airflow discharged into the hopper can exhaust through the passageway extending between the broom and the hopper.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 2004Date of Patent: September 16, 2008Assignee: Elgin Sweeper Co.Inventors: Brian David Giles, Peter J. McDonough

Publication number: 20080029014Abstract: A monohull surface ship has a hull having a profile which produces a high pressure area at a bottom portion of the hull in a stern section of the hull and hydrodynamic lifting of the stern section at a speed above a length Froude number of 0.30. The ship includes an apparatus for introducing a drag reducing substance into the boundary layer of water flowing over a submerged portion of the hull in substantially straight flow lines relative to the waterline to reduce skin-friction over a relatively large wetted area of the hull at speeds exceeding a length Froude number of 0.25.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 29, 2007Publication date: February 7, 2008Inventor: David Giles

Publication number: 20080030798Abstract: Systems and methods for assisting in the determination of the authenticity of security documents based on known characteristics of similar but authentic security documents. The system and methods use digital processing to capture a digital image of the document being examined and they use a feature localization or detection technique to search for a specific feature in the document based on a stored image of a similar feature from an authentic document. Once the feature on the subject document has been found, the digital image of the localized feature is transformed, by applying mathematical transforms or other image/mathematical operators, such that the result will have distinguishing characteristics that can be derived or analyzed. When the distinguishing characteristics have been analyzed, these are then compared to the stored distinguishing characteristics of similar features from known authentic documents.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2006Publication date: February 7, 2008Inventor: David Giles O'Neil

Publication number: 20080025556Abstract: The invention relates to the field of document authentication and more specifically to an apparatus and method for validating an enhanced feature contained in a document under analysis. More specifically, a cross plane comparison is used within a document comparison system to validate the authenticity of a security document. Two images are extracted from two colour-planes (e.g. visible light and infrared) of a specified page of a security document and the presence/absence of a pattern or text in each plane is determined. In operation, the security document is exposed to two light sources and grey scale images are extracted. Binary images are then obtained from the grey scale images by filtering each grey scale image and then thresholding each grey scale image. The difference between the two binary images is then calculated to determine if a pattern or text is present in both planes or only in one plane.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2006Publication date: January 31, 2008Inventors: Tiberiu Visan, David Giles O'Neil, Gregory John Brown
