  • Patent number: 9180632
Abstract: An advanced reflexive structure system is disclosed. The reflexive system mimics the pain withdrawal reflex on which the human body relies. The reflexive system incorporates a continuous health and performance monitoring system via an embedded dielectric film, an adaptive composite structure based on shape memory composite material, and an intelligence system which will be interfaced with both the health/performance sensors and the adaptive structure. When activated shape memory polymer will recover its structural integrity via shape recovery and a reptation healing process. These features enable the use of SMP as an adaptive structure in the proposed reflexive system. The development of a reflexive system for structures will enable increased safety and security and demonstrate a better understanding of integrated performance systems.

  • Patent number: 9182211
Abstract: A calibration method comprises providing a mounting fixture including a tray coupled to a frame, and an alignment measurement sensor removably coupled to the tray. An angular orientation of the tray is determined using the alignment measurement sensor removably coupled to the tray in a first position. The alignment measurement sensor is then moved to a second position on the tray that is rotated from the first position, and the angular orientation of the tray is determined using the alignment measurement sensor at the second position. An axis misalignment for at least two of a pitch axis, a roll axis, or a yaw axis of the alignment measurement sensor is then calculated to determine one or more misalignment factors. The one or more misalignment factors are then applied to correct for misalignment of the alignment measurement sensor.

  • Patent number: 9183224
Abstract: A server system receives a visual query from a client system. The visual query is an image containing text such as a picture of a document. At the receiving server or another server, optical character recognition (OCR) is performed on the visual query to produce text recognition data representing textual characters. Each character in a contiguous region of the visual query is individually scored according to its quality. The quality score of a respective character is influenced by the quality scores of neighboring or nearby characters. Using the scores, one or more high quality strings of characters are identified. Each high quality string has a plurality of high quality characters. A canonical document containing the one or more high quality textual strings is retrieved. At least a portion of the canonical document is sent to the client system.

  • Patent number: 9181953
Abstract: A method for improving the energy efficiency of a pump system. The method includes measuring an instantaneous power consumption of the pump system, measuring an instantaneous fluid flow rate of the pump system, and determining an instantaneous specific energy consumption (SEC) of the pump system based on the instantaneous power consumption and the instantaneous fluid flow rate. The method then adjusts the speed of a pump in response to the determined SEC. The above steps may be performed a number of times to seek a reduced value of the instantaneous SEC of the pump system.

  • Patent number: 9183043
Abstract: Particular techniques for improving the scalability of concurrent programs (e.g., lock-based applications) may be effective in some environments and for some workloads, but not others. The systems described herein may automatically choose appropriate ones of these techniques to apply when executing lock-based applications at runtime, based on observations of the application in the current environment and with the current workload. In one example, two techniques for improving lock scalability (e.g., transactional lock elision using hardware transactional memory, and optimistic software techniques) may be integrated together. A lightweight runtime library built for this purpose may adapt its approach to managing concurrency by dynamically selecting one or more of these techniques (at different times) during execution of a given application.

  • Patent number: 9183593
Abstract: An automated insurance quote system allows users to apply for one or more insurance quotes through a self-service communication channel. The system includes an interface that may receive applicant data from a remote location. A front-end processor selectively passes applicant data to a record keeping system retained in a memory. A controller or quote processors selects and transmits one or more insurance policies that are allowed under a user's governmental law and are tailored to the user's price and/or coverage preferences. The system conveys coverage details to users through the interface.
