    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a tread and a tire having a tread, wherein over most of a circumferential length i) a maximum axial width in a top portion of a tread groove is at least 5% smaller than an axial width of the tread groove in its bottom portion, ii) the axial width of the tread groove in the bottom portion is at least 5% smaller than the maximum axial width of the tread groove in a radial intermediate portion of the tread groove, and iii) a maximum axial width of the tread groove in the intermediate portion is within a range of 15% to 50% of the total radial height of the tread groove.
