Abstract: A system receives a call from a user via a telephone in which the user requests data files from a computer network. A Teletext page is allocated to the user by the system and identified by a number. The system generates a menu in the allocated Teletext page and includes it in a broadcast television signal from which the user makes a selection by pushing a number on the telephone keypad. The number identifies a data file on the computer network. The system writes the information from the requested file to the Teletext page included in the television broadcast signal.

Abstract: Acetic acid and/or vinyl acetate are produced by an integrated process in which a gaseous feedstock comprising ethylene and/or ethane and optionally steam is contacted in a first reaction zone (step (a)) with a molecular oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst active for the oxidation of ethylene to acetic acid and/or ethane to acetic acid and ethylene to produce a first product stream comprising acetic acid, water and ethylene (either as unreacted ethylene and/or as co-produced ethylene) and optionally also ethane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and/or nitrogen.

Abstract: A pointing device having a sensor for directing towards an icon displayed on a display screen. The sensor generates a sense signal indicative of an attribute of the icon. An audio generator generates, in dependence on the sense signal, an audio signal for subsequent detection by the microphone of a telephone. Also, a system includes the pointing device, for remote selection of one or more options in a data processing apparatus. The system is capable of receiving a call from a telephone; allocating a teletext page in a television signal in response to the call; associating each option with an icon; writing each icon to the allocated teletext page; associating each icon with an audio signal; and, activating each option on receipt of the corresponding audio signal from the telephone.

Abstract: A system for controlling data access in a computer network comprises first means for establishing a first communication link between a client computer and a server computer. The client sends a request to the server for supply of a data item from the server to the client. The server selects the requested data item from a store of data items in response to the request from the client. The server associates each data item in the store with a service telephone number. The server also identifies a subscriber telephone number associated with the request. A second communication link is then established between the server and a telephone utility. The server instructs the telephone utility to register a telephone call from the subscriber telephone number to the service telephone number associated with the requested data item. The requested data item is supplied from the server to the client on receipt by the server of confirmation from the telephone utility that the telephone call is registered.

Abstract: A process for the recovery of a carbonylation product from a liquid reaction composition of an iridium-catalysed carbonylation reaction of a carbonylatable reactant comprises subjecting the composition to a vaporization with or without the addition of heat to produce a vapor-fraction and a liquid fraction, the vapor fraction comprises carbonylation product and the liquid fraction has a water concentration of at least 0.5% by weight to stabilize the iridium catalyst.

Abstract: In the process for the production of acetic acid by carbonylation of methanol and/or a reactive derivative thereof the water concentration in the liquid reaction composition is maintained at a steady-state concentration by at least one process step selected from the group consisting of (i) recovery and disposing of water from at least part of the overhead process stream from the light ends column and (ii) replacing at least a portion of the methanol feed with a component selected from the group consisting of methyl acetate, dimethyl ether, acetic anhydride and mixtures thereof. The recovered aqueous effluent from this and other processes may be purified of carboxylic acid by reactive distillation with at least one C.sub.1 to C.sub.3 alcohol.

Abstract: An infant car seat comprises a back support portion and a leg support portion which merge together at a junction region and which afford respective retaining means. Overlying the junction region is a flexible contour modifying sheet with engagement means at each of two opposed ends. The engagement means at one end are inseparably engaged with the associated retaining means whereby the contour modifying member is not removable from the seat. The other engagement means then extends between the two retaining means spaced from the junction region and has a radius of curvature greater than that of the junction region.

Abstract: A bracket device for a shelving or display system consists of a body and one or more support members removably attached to the body. The bracket body is adapted to be mounted on an upright. It has a series of open ended, part-circular recesses disposed in and about its periphery for receiving support members. Each support member has a corresponding part-circular tapered part which slides into and engages one of the recesses so as to be retained in the recess and another part for projecting through the mouth of the recess and supporting an element of the shelving or display system.

Abstract: In a process for removing iodide compounds from a liquid composition comprising carboxylic acids having 2 to 6 carbon atoms or anhydrides thereof, by passing the liquid composition through a silver, mercury, palladium and/or rhodium-exchanged strong acid cation exchange resin, prior to contacting with the metal-exchanged resin the composition is contacted with a cation exchanger in the acid form to remove at least a portion of the metal ion contaminants in the liquid composition which have been found to displace the silver, mercury, palladium and/or rhodium from the metal-exchanged resin.
