Publication number: 20100183403Abstract: A nail having an offset head is configured with a multi-step support gusset formed integrally between an undersurface of the offset head and a superior portion of a shank. The head of the nail is relatively thin, and the shank is positioned radially off center of the head. A first portion of the gusset defines an angle relative to the shank axis and the second portion of the gusset defines an angle relative to the shank axis different from that of the first portion. The support gusset reinforces the junction of the shank with the head, supports the toe of the head, and distributes the force of a load on the head through a longitudinal axis of the shank, preventing the toe from bending or yielding and prevents the shank from yielding to the stresses of the load applied.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2009Publication date: July 22, 2010Applicant: ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS INC.Inventors: Zafar I. Ali, Donald E. Bergstrom, William L. Gabriel

Publication number: 20100119329Abstract: A fastener assembly includes a row of fasteners having a head, a tip, and a portion of a shank coated with a polymer composition. The polymer composition includes a polymer material such as polyurethane and metal particles. The polymer composition is used to provide improved corrosion and ultraviolet radiation resistance when used with naturally corrosive or pressure preservative treated wood. The fastener assembly is coated with the polymer composition by vacuum coating a dispersion of the polymer composition in a solvent such as water and removing the solvent.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 21, 2009Publication date: May 13, 2010Inventors: Geronimo E. Lat, Daniel P. McDonald, Henry W. Schniedermeier, Paul L. Hicks, Harold D. Gray, Donald E. Bergstrom, Guenther Kram, Garry F. Tupek

Publication number: 20100014941Abstract: A full-round head nail having an offset head is configured with a gusset formed integrally between an undersurface of the offset head and a superior portion of a shank. The head of the nail is relatively thin, and the shank is positioned radially off center of the round head such that no heel is formed at a point tangential to both the head and the shank. The gusset has a lofted surface tapering radially from a roundness at the zero heel to a taper at the toe. The gusset reinforces the junction of the shank with the head, supports the toe of the head, and distributes the force of a load on the head through a longitudinal axis of the shank, preventing the toe from bending or yielding and prevents the shank from yielding to the stresses of the load applied.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 18, 2008Publication date: January 21, 2010Applicant: ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS INC.Inventors: William L. Gabriel, Zafar I. Ali, Alvis H. Ferrell, Daniel P. McDonald, James W. Robinson, Donald E. Bergstrom

Publication number: 20090155021Abstract: A nail has a head, a penetrating tip and a shank extending from the head to the penetrating tip. The shank has a circumference and a longitudinal axis. A plurality of rows of deformations formed as teeth are formed in the shank extending outwardly of the shank. The rows are formed in a spiral pattern along the length of the shank from about the head to about the penetrating tip. The rows of teeth are formed parallel to one another and formed at an angle of at least 50 degrees relative to a cross-sectional plane perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the nail.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 12, 2008Publication date: June 18, 2009Applicant: ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS INC.Inventors: Anthony M. Publication number: 20080282529Abstract: A fastener assembly is configured for use in an associated fastener driving tool for driving a fastener from the assembly into an associated substrate. The assembly includes a row of fasteners, each having a shank, arranged substantially parallel to each other. A collation system is formed from a plastic material that is molded onto and adhered to the fasteners. The plastic material is molded to define a collar portion substantially encircling the fastener shank and a connecting portion extending between and connecting adjacent collar potions. The plastic material is formulated from an adhesive polymer. When the fastener is driven from the driving tool, the collar portion remains adhered to the fastener such that the collar portion penetrates the substrate with the fastener.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 21, 2008Publication date: November 20, 2008Applicant: ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS INC.Inventors: Lawrence S. Publication number: 20070264103Abstract: A fastener assembly for use in an associated fastener driving tool for driving a fastener from the assembly, in sequential order, into an associated substrate, includes a row of fasteners arranged substantially parallel to each other, each fastener having a shank and defining an axis and a collation system formed from a plastic material that is molded onto and adhered to the fasteners. The plastic material defines a collar portion at least substantially encircling the fastener shank and a connecting portion extending between and connecting adjacent collar portions. When the fastener is driven from the driving tool, the collar portion remains adhered to the fastener such that the collar portion penetrates the substrate with the fastener, and the connecting portion includes a preferentially weakened region to influence separation of the connecting portion from the collar at a desired location.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 12, 2007Publication date: November 15, 2007Applicant: ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS INC.Inventors: Lawrence S. Patent number: 7244831Abstract: Ligase detection reaction is utilized to distinguish minority template in the presence of an excess of normal template with a thermostable ligase. This process can be carried out with a mutant ligase, thermostable ligase, or a modified oligonucleotide probe. This procedure is particularly useful for the detection of cancer-associated mutations. It has the advantage of providing a quantitative measure of the amount or ratio of minority template.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2003Date of Patent: July 17, 2007Assignees: Cornell Research Foundation, Inc., Purdue Research FoundationInventors: Francis Barany, Jianying Luo, Marilyn Khanna, Donald E. Patent number: 7208528Abstract: Novel inhibitors of polyamine transport having inhibition constants two orders of magnitude lower than those of known compounds are disclosed. These polyamine analogues are useful pharmaceutical agents for treating diseases where it is desired to inhibit polyamine transport or other polyamine binding proteins, for example cancer and post-angioplasty injury. Novel chemical synthetic methods to obtain polyamine analogues are disclosed, including the production of a combinational polyamine library. These approaches yield analogues with desirable activities both for diagnostic and research assays and therapy. The assays of the invention are useful for high throughput screening of targets in the discovery of drugs that interact with the polyamine system.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1999Date of Patent: April 24, 2007Assignee: MediQuest Therapeutics, Inc.Inventors: Nicolaas M. Patent number: 7014994Abstract: The present invention provides a method for identifying one or more low abundance sequences differing by one or more single-base changes, insertions, or deletions, from a high abundance sequence in a plurality of target nucleotide sequences. The high abundance wild-type sequence is selectively removed using high fidelity polymerase chain reaction analog conversion, facilitated by optimal buffer conditions, to create a restriction endonuclease site in the high abundance wild-type gene, but not in the low abundance mutant gene. This allows for digestion of the high abundance DNA. Subsequently the low abundant mutant DNA is amplified and detected by the ligase detection reaction assay. The present invention also relates to a kit for carrying out this procedure.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 2000Date of Patent: March 21, 2006Assignees: Cornell Research Foundation,Inc., Purdue Research Foundation, Board of Supervisors of Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical CollegeInventors: Francis Barany, Joseph P.
