  • Publication number: 20140257257
Abstract: A system and its method for treating targeted tissue in the vitreous cavity of an eye include a laser unit for generating a laser beam and a detector for creating an image of the targeted tissue. The system also includes a computer which defines a focal spot path for emulsifying the targeted tissue. A comparator that is connected with the computer then controls the laser unit to move the focal spot of the laser beam. This focal spot movement is accomplished to treat the targeted tissue, while minimizing deviations of the focal spot from the defined focal spot path.

  • Patent number: 8520468
Abstract: A method and system for controlling the shape and separation of an arrangement of streamers towed behind a survey vessel. Each streamer is steered laterally by lateral steering devices positioned along its length at specific nodes. Each streamer is driven by its lateral steering devices to achieve a specified separation from a neighboring streamer. One of these actual streamers, used as a reference by the other actual streamers, is steered to achieve a specified separation from an imaginary, or ghost, streamer virtually towed with the actual streamers.

  • Patent number: 8510061
Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer readable media for wireless crack detection and monitoring are disclosed. According to one system, a crack detector is affixed to a surface of a material for detecting a crack in the material. In response to detecting a crack, a crack indicator is generated, indicating the existence of the crack. A mote wirelessly communicates the crack indicator to an external device. The mote may also store multiple crack indicators in local memory before being downloaded to the external device. In other embodiments, the mote may time-stamp the crack indicator for indicating a time when the crack was detected. Additionally, the mote may associate other information with the crack indicator such as temperature and acceleration information.

  • Publication number: 20130103012
Abstract: A system and method are provided for obviating Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) which require an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) device for imaging the interface surface between the posterior surface of an intraocular lens (IOL) and the capsular bag. Further, the OCT device is used to identify areas of relative opacity caused by a biological growth on the interface surface in the optical zone of the IOL. A laser unit is then used to direct the focal point of a femtosecond laser beam onto the areas of relative opacity to ablate the biological growth by Laser Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB) to thereby obviate the PCO.

  • Publication number: 20130103010
Abstract: A system and method for performing Laser Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB) on a target tissue includes a detector for imaging the interface surface between the target tissue and a base tissue. Also included is a laser unit for generating a laser beam, and for focusing the laser beam to a focal point. A computer is provided for controlling movement of the focal point. Specifically, this control is accomplished to maintain the focal point in the target tissue, but beyond a predetermined distance from the interface surface. For the present invention, the predetermined distance is established by considerations of laser beam geometry, which are applied in the context of images that are created of the interface surface.

  • Publication number: 20130103015
Abstract: A system and method are provided for debulking scar tissue in the retina by the Laser Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB) of scar tissue. The identification, location and extent of the scar tissue is accomplished using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) techniques. OCT imaging is also used to monitor the debulking procedure.

  • Publication number: 20130100409
Abstract: A system and method are provided for combining the imaging capabilities of an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) device with the calculated results of ray tracing techniques. The combination is then used to derive a predictive refractive outcome for an optical model. The resultant optical model includes diopter power and size information for use in preoperative planning (e.g. a capsulotomy) and/or for the manufacture of an Intraocular Lens (IOL).

  • Publication number: 20130103011
Abstract: A system and its method for creating a microchannel in the trabecular meshwork of an eye include a laser unit for generating a laser beam, and an imaging unit for creating an image of the trabecular meshwork. The system also includes a computer which defines the microchannel. A comparator that is connected with the computer then controls the laser unit to move the focal point of the laser beam. This focal point movement is accomplished to create the microchannel, while minimizing deviations of the focal point from the defined microchannel.

  • Publication number: 20130072915
Abstract: A system and method are provided wherein an operational characteristic of a laser beam is identified. A predetermined ophthalmic reference datum is also identified. The identified laser beam characteristic is then used in its relationship with the reference datum for guidance and control of the laser beam's focal point. In operation, the laser beam's focal point is moved through eye tissue while minimizing any deviations of the operational characteristic of the laser beam from the reference datum.

  • Publication number: 20120114795
Abstract: A method for preparing a modified whey protein concentrate (WPC) or whey protein isolate (WPI) is described. It involves (a) providing an aqueous WPC or WPI solution having a protein concentration of 15-50% (w/v), at a pH of 4.7-8.5; (b) heat treating the solution to more than 50° C., for a time that allows protein denaturation to occur; the heat treating comprising heating the solution while under conditions of turbulent flow. At the end of the heat treatment, the heat treated material may be promptly transferred to a drier or to be mixed with other ingredients. The heat-treated WPC or WPI is not subjected to a mechanical shear process prior to the transfer other than where liquid is converted into droplets to facilitate drying. The modified WPC is useful in the manufacture of food and drinks where a high protein content is desired without undesirable changes in texture.
