  • Patent number: 7742850
Abstract: An end of train unit includes a positioning system such as a GPS receiver and is configured to transmit a message including the EOT unit's location when the EOT unit detects a loss of air pipe pressure and/or it is tipped over and/or a low battery condition is detected. In highly preferred embodiments, the EOT unit periodically re-transmits the message until an acknowledgment message is received. In some embodiments, information from the positioning system is used to create a signal as a substitute for a motion sensor. In other embodiments, information from the positioning system is used to determine the speed of the end of the train. End of train unit tracking is also performed.

  • Patent number: 7722134
Abstract: A method and system for providing true failsafe control of an electronic braking system by a train control system which controls a switch that supplies power to the electronic braking system. When the train control system determines that it is necessary to activate the train's brakes, it controls the switch so as to remove power to the electronic braking system, which results in activation of the train's brakes. In highly preferred embodiments, the switch is of a type that is normally open and that requires the presence of an electrical signal to close the switch to supply power to the electronic braking system. In such embodiments, any loss in power to the train control system will result in a loss of signal to the switch, thereby causing activation of the train's brakes.

  • Publication number: 20100019103
Abstract: A fuel efficiency improvement device for use on each of a plurality of locomotives in a consist includes a processor configured to transmit an initialization message including an identifier and power and fuel consumption rate information for the locomotive on which it is installed to all other locomotives in the consist. One of the devices is chosen to act as a lead device. The lead device is responsible for determining alternative throttle notch settings for each of the locomotives based on the power and fuel consumption rate information in the initialization message. The lead device may be chosen on the basis of identifiers in the initialization messages such as serial numbers. The alternative throttle settings may be determined using greedy value and maximum power calculations.

  • Patent number: 7645795
Abstract: The administration of nutritional supplements such as phosphatidylcholine; linoleic acid and alpha linolenic acid in an approximately 4:1 (v/v) ratio; and mineral supplements provides an effective method for the treatment of ALS. Subjects presenting with symptoms indicative of ALS can therefore be treated with these nutritional supplements to inhibit progression of ALS. Subjects at risk for developing ALS can also be treated with these nutritional supplements to delay the onset of ALS symptoms.

  • Patent number: 7593795
Abstract: A method and system for compensating for wheel wear uses position and/or speed information from an independent positioning system to measure some distance over which the train has traveled. Wheel rotation information is also collected over the distance. The wheel rotation information and distance and/or speed information are then used to determine the size of the train wheels. The method is performed periodically to correct for changes in wheel size over time due to wear so that the wheel rotation information can be used to determine train position and speed in the event of a positioning system failure.

  • Publication number: 20090058624
Abstract: A system and method for ensuring that an operator remain alert includes monitoring the operator to determine when the operator is actively working the train controls, and, when the operator has not actively worked the controls for a first period of time, displaying a sequence the repetition of which requires cognitive alertness of the operator. If the operator fails to repeat the sequence, or a corresponding sequence, the train is stopped. In some embodiments, the cognitive alerter is inoperative below predetermined speed levels.

  • Publication number: 20090043435
Abstract: Position reports from GPS receivers can be made vital through a variety of techniques including relative differential GPS corrections and a technique in which a train traveling on a fixed path is provided with a database that includes positions on fixed paths or data from which positions on fixed paths can be determined. Position reports from GPS receivers located on the vehicle are compared to the positions of the fixed paths in the database. If the distance from the position reported by the GPS receiver to the nearest point on the nearest fixed path is greater than the stated accuracy of the GPS receiver, the position report is discarded or other corrective action is taken. A second technique involves cross-checking position reports from two GPS receivers separated by a known distance, preferably mounted on a single vehicle. Still other techniques may be used.

  • Publication number: 20080099633
Abstract: A method and apparatus for actuating a train horn use the speed of the train to determine when to start a horn sequence such that the horn sequence complies with all applicable regulations. In one embodiment, an engineer enters a command, such as by pushing a button, when a predetermined distance from a grade crossing is reached. A processor then determines the speed of the train from a tachometer. The speed is used to determine how long it will take to reach the grade crossing. Preferably, this calculation is repeated until the time to reach the grade crossing is within a window during which the horn sequence must be started. The processor or other device then causes the horn to sound in the required pattern.

  • Patent number: 7236860
Abstract: A train control system includes a positioning system and consults a database to determine when the train is approaching a configurable device such as a switch or grade crossing gate. The system continuously interrogates the device to determine its status as the train approaches the device, and forces an engineer/conductor to acknowledge any detected malfunction. The train is forced to come to a complete stop before proceeding past the device or may be slowed down to a speed that will allow the engineer/conductor to visually determine whether it is safe to proceed past the device if the engineer/conductor acknowledges a message warning of the malfunction and will stop the train if the engineer/conductor fails to acknowledge the warning message.
