Abstract: A system and a method for updating an electronic paper display are disclosed. A memory includes a waveform table and a transition matrix including multiple pixels, each representing a pixel of the electronic paper display. A page transition display system is coupled to the memory and identifies waveforms from the waveform table associated with multiple transition matrix pixels by processing multiple transition matrix pixels in parallel. For example, the page transition display system loads multiple transition matrix pixels into a register and accesses the waveform table using the contents of the register. Using the identified waveforms, the page transition display system generates control signals used to modify the electronic paper device.

Abstract: A system and method for sharing documents and markup to documents in near real-time. A server coupled with a plurality of client devices via a network is configured to fairly distribute documents to each of the plurality of client devices in one or more collaborative sessions. The server receives a document for distribution to a plurality of client devices associated with a particular collaborative session, breaks the documents into pieces, and repeatedly, until all pieces of the document are distributed: selects a piece of the document for transmission, sends the selected piece to each of the plurality of client devices, computes a delay based on the size of the selected piece and a minimum network bandwidth, and waits for the computed delay.

Abstract: A system for paper-like forms processing includes a plurality of portable computing devices coupled by a network to a paper-like forms server. The portable computing devices are adapted to receive images (e.g., compound documents/forms), add stroke annotations to the received images, and send the annotated received images or the stoke annotations themselves to the paper-like forms server. The paper-like forms server comprises a central scheduler and a logging module. The paper-like forms server processes compound documents as paper like forms and sends input to and receives results from service providers to perform various types of paper like processing on the compound document. The paper-like forms server performs the scheduling, routing, logging, verification and billing for the paper-like processing of compound documents. The central scheduler also stores results from service providers for later retrieval.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed herein for automatically ending an interactive device session. In one embodiment, the system comprises a memory; and a processor coupled to the memory and operable to: log out a user, delete locally stored data created during a session, and place one or more system hardware components in a reduced power consumption state based on: occupancy sensor data indicating presence or absence of one or more individuals in proximity to an occupancy sensor, and activity information associated with a display surface.

Abstract: A system and method for creating a table from one or more form images is described. An Image Based Document Management (IBDM) server includes a stroke identification module, an image generator, a table generator and a preference module. The stroke identification module receives completed form data from one or more forms with handwriting fields, media fields and symbolic fields. The image generator generates field images that are a combination of handwriting fields, media fields and symbolic fields. The user preference module determines a user preference for displaying the table. The table generator generates a table from the field images based on the user preference.

Abstract: Power usage of a portable computing device is modified to more efficiently use a power supply included in the portable computing device. Power usage by different components of the portable computing device is modified based on use of the portable computing device to allow dynamic modification of power consumption. The portable computing device includes data describing various power management states and the portable computing device transitions between different power management states as it is used, modifying the power consumption of various components in different power management states. Various communication device operating states are also defined to modify power usage by communication devices included in the portable computing device based on device usage.

Abstract: An electronic writing solution server includes a classification application that comprises a classifier and a user interface engine. The classifier receives multimedia data on a form, identifies at least one field in the form to be modified and modifies the at least one field in the form based on the multimedia data. The user interface engine provides the modified form to a user.

Abstract: An electronic writing solution server includes a query engine and a user interface engine. The query engine receives a search query from a user, the search query specifying a field in at least one form and including a first stroke or text, retrieves clusters from a database, retrieves example strokes from the clusters at vary levels of similarity to the first stroke, receives user selections for strokes of interest from the example strokes, and retrieves information associated with the strokes of interest from the database. The user interface engine generates graphical data for presenting the retrieved information to the user.

Abstract: A system and method for creating one or more manifests that group one or more forms by one or more tasks is described. A manifest application determines one or more tasks and a first order for the one or more tasks, determines one or more forms associated with each task and a second order for the one or more forms within each task, generates one or more user interface elements that each link to a corresponding form within each tasks, generates a manifest comprising a summary of the one or more tasks in the first order, the forms in the second order for each task and the user interface elements that each link to a corresponding form and provides the manifest for display on a portable computing device.

Abstract: The disclosure includes a system and method for aggregating form data based on marks in graphic form fields. The system includes a controller, a request customization module, a search module and a presentation module. The controller receives data indicating an initiation of a search request from a user, data describing a form selected by the user, data describing a graphic form field specified by the user in the form and data describing a region of interest specified by the user in the graphic form field. The request customization module customizes the search request using the region of interest. The search module performs a form search on a collection of form data using the search request to determine one or more matching forms that each include at least one mark satisfying the region of interest. The presentation module provides the one or more matching forms to the user.

Abstract: An electronic writing solution server includes a workflow dashboard application that comprises a dashboard generator. The dashboard generator receives a collection of forms, each form in the collection being of a same type and having been created from a dashboard template, the dashboard template including an association of fields, steps and indicators in each form, identifies which fields have been filled in by at least one user for each form, determines a current step of a multistep workflow based on the fields that have been filled out for each form and generates a dashboard for displaying a number of forms that correspond to each step.

Abstract: A system and method for creating a table including multiple rows to accommodate redundant field information is described. A table creation module receives a completed form, generates field images, determines a set of unique field images, redundant fields and associated fields in the completed form, populates a first row of the table in a first column with a first unique field image, adds remaining field images from the set of unique field images to the first row, populates the first row with a first redundant field image and remaining field images from a first set of associated fields. The tables can be used to create an organized report.

The sort engine determines, from a sort request for a column of the table received from a user, at least a first priority for a first data type, the column including at least two of the data types, determines from the sort request a second priority within one of the data types, and sorts the column according to the sort request.

Abstract: An Image Based Document Management (IBDM) server includes a state recorder, a query engine, a view creation module and a user interface engine. The view creation module creates a first view of a collection based on at least one operation from a first user. The state recorder receives a selection of the first view of the collection from a user. The query engine runs a query associated with the first view of the collection. The user interface engine generates graphical data for presenting a list of views of the collection including the first view of the collection to a user and for displaying the first view of the collection to the user.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for using layout objects or layers are described. In one embodiment, the method comprises accessing information in a JPM file having a plurality of layout objects and generating at least one image using the plurality of layout objects, wherein a first set of at least one of the layout objects of the plurality of layout objects in the image occludes a second set of one or more layout objects in the plurality of layout objects.

Abstract: Compound document images are usually high resolution and high quality images that include color, graphics, and images in addition to text. The need for good compression is important for storage and transmission. Due to the large size, even compressed, it is often difficult to access document images quickly and efficiently for display on monitors. The nascent JPM file format enables the best compound document image compression in terms of rate-distortion. However, the access into a JPM file is limited by the access features of the coders used. JPEG 2000 is an image coding system that allows access to lower resolutions, progressive bit-rates, and regions of interest.

Abstract: A handheld portable printer includes members and a handle that are joined together to form a generally O-shaped device. The members provide a rigid and strong structure and an area for housing a projector to project an image on the print surface of the image to be printed. The bottom member houses a pair of absolute position sensors spaced apart and aligned upon the longitudinal axis on the bottom of the handheld portable printer. A controller is associated with the absolute position sensors to produce precise position information. The controller uses the precise position information to control the projection of the image to be printed and the printing of pixels by the print head. In one embodiment, the print head is controlled such that each pixel is printed at least twice.

Abstract: A system and method for applying a pre-existing physical seal authorization to documents provides for authentication of electronic documents using physical seals and without interrupting the electronic workflow. The system of the present invention includes a seal capture device coupled to a computer, and the computer coupled by a network to a paper-like document server. The seal capture device detects depression of a seal thereon and outputs the image of the seal and other metadata to the computer. The computer stores the metadata in its local log using a logging module. The computer also adds the image of the seal and other metadata to the electronic document being displayed. Finally, the computer sends the metadata for storage in the global log of the paper-like document server, and the authorized document to the next step in the electronic workflow. The paper-like document server stores the metadata in other servers or entangles the global log with the logs of other servers for additional security.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing compression and/or decompression is described. In one embodiment, the present invention comprises a system having a buffer, a wavelet transform unit, and a coder. The wavelet transform unit has an input coupled to the buffer to perform a wavelet transform on pixels stored therein and to generate coefficients at an output. The coder is coupled to the wavelet transform unit to code the transformed pixels received from the buffer.
