  • Patent number: 6510336
Abstract: A device for locating radiopharmaceutical labeled diseased or malfunctioning candidate cells within a human body and a method for using the device. The method includes the labeling of target cells in a body with a radionuclide and the identification in situ of the candidate cells using a body insertable nuclear probe sensitive to the presence of the radionuclide label. More particularly, the invention relates to using a beta or gamma probe to locate labeled cells, also referred to as candidate cells while simultaneously generating an MRI image and/or a visual image. The device may also include attachments to the distal tip if the probe which allows the position of the tip within the body to be tracked and recorded or the aperture to be varied in size.

  • Publication number: 20020077448
Abstract: The present invention is directed to processes for the manufacture of multifilament yarn, including the steps of extruding multifilaments of a polymer containing at least mole 85 percent L-lactide and not more than 15 mole percent glycolide, spinning the extruded multifilaments to form a spun yarn, passing the spun multifilament yarn through an orientation roll heated at a temperature of less than 98° C. and drawing the spun multifilament yarn to a draw ratio of at least 4:1 to form an oriented multifilament fiber, annealing the oriented multifilament yarn at a temperature greater than that of the orientation roll, and redrawing the annealed, oriented multifilament yarn by at least 10 percent at a temperature lower than the temperature of annealing.

  • Patent number: 6172489
Abstract: An AC voltage reduction system and method providing highly efficient reduction of utility voltage with minimal electromagnetic interference is provided. The systems and methods may also be used to improve overall facility power factor. The AC voltage provided to a load, such as a group of lighting ballasts connected on a single circuit, is reduced by a controllable switch coupled in parallel with a capacitor between the AC source and the load. The switch is controlled to turn-on when the voltage across the capacitor is very close to zero and turn-off prior to the next zero-crossing of the line current. The turn-off time is selected in an open loop configuration independently of a measured characteristic of load voltage or watts. In order to provide proper operation of gas discharge lighting, the switch is initially turned off just in advance of the AC source current zero-crossing.

  • Patent number: 6071434
Abstract: The reaction of compounds of the formula:X.sub.2 O.sub.3 P CHY CZ.sub.2where Y and each Z are each H, PO.sub.3 X.sub.2, SO.sub.3 X or CO.sub.2 X (e.g. vinyl phosphonic acid or vinylidene diphosphonic acid) with hypophosphorous acid in the presence of free radicals provides novel compounds X.sub.2 O.sub.3 PCHYCZ.sub.2 PO.sub.2 XH which react with monomers such as vinyl sulphonate, vinyl phosphonate, vinylidene diphosphonate and acrylic acid to form telomers useful for scale inhibition, especially barium scale in oil wells. The polymers show better absorption to rock than PVSA and better thermal stability than random copolymers containing equivalent phosphorus.

  • Patent number: 6053188
Abstract: An umbrella comprising a central shaft having an upper end and a lower end with the lower end including a handle incorporates a plurality of pivotable members each having a first end pivotally coupled to an upper end of the shaft and being circumferentially spaced about the shaft and oriented generally parallel thereto when the umbrella is in a collapsed condition. A plurality of flexible members are operatively associated with corresponding ones of the pivotable members. The flexible members are each expandable into a generally hoop-shaped configuration adjacent another end of the pivotable members when the pivotable members are pivoted from a collapsed condition to an operative position. The open umbrella appears as a canopy stretched over a plurality of circumferentially spaced ribs with each rib terminating in a hoop-shaped member.

  • Patent number: 5980776
Abstract: Phosphonic acid polymers are prepared from di- or polyphosphonic acids having one or more unsaturated C.dbd.C bonds (e.g. vinylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid), either as homopolymers or as higher polymers with at least one further compound having unsaturated C.dbd.C bonds (e.g. acrylic acid). The polymers can be used as, or in connection with, flame-retardants, corrosion inhibitors, coatings, cements and ion exchange resins.

  • Patent number: 5754036
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for AC power regulation for a wide range of complex capacitive and inductive loads which provide substantial reduction in power consumption while also providing a leading power factor. The system is self-adjusting for a wide range of loads and can reduce power consumption by 25 percent in lighting loads while producing minimal reduction in light output. The system utilizes a main switch consisting of back-to-back MOS Controlled Thyristor devices (MCTs) and a parallel capacitor bank in series with the load. The main switch is initially turned off slightly in advance of the load current zero crossing, and this in combination with the capacitor bank allows power to be reduced in a low noise fashion. The turn-off time is advanced gradually to regulate power at a target reduced level. At the target power level, load phase angle is measured and maintained to control the power savings ratio.

  • Patent number: 3959672
Abstract: A variable reluctance electric motor comprises a stator including at least three pairs of pole pieces with windings surrounding at least one of the pole pieces of each pair, and a rotor structure. The rotor structure defines a pair of opposed pole pieces each having circumferentially extending extensions on the opposite sides thereof. The extensions extend at least to the adjacent pair of stator pole pieces when the rotor pole pieces are aligned with stator pole pieces, and be selective energisation of the pairs of stator pole pieces, the rotor can be made to move angularly in either direction.
