  • Publication number: 20100042447
Abstract: A system and method are provided for direct manipulation of a triangular distribution of information using a graphical user interface. The system includes a graphical user interface for receiving user inputted values. The system further includes a data calculator for generating estimates based on the user inputted values, and for generating curves for display on a grid based on at least one of, the user inputted values and the estimates. The graphical user interface respectively receives the user inputted values based at least on a current position of a pointer on the grid. The graphical user interface is capable of applying a direct manipulation, based at least on the current position of the pointer on the grid, to at least one of the user inputted values and the estimates, such that a result of the direct manipulation is displayed on the grid.

  • Publication number: 20090265120
Abstract: A method of monitoring a structure, the method comprising positioning one or more strain gauges on the structure; acquiring strain data with the gauges(s); analyzing the strain data to determine whether the structure has undergone plastic deformation; and providing an output in accordance with the analysis. By analyzing the strain data to determine whether the structure has undergone plastic deformation, a more reliable determination can be made of whether the structure has experienced an excessively high transient loading event such as a hard landing of an aircraft, or the lifting of an excessive load by a crane.

  • Publication number: 20070253561
Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer program products for monitoring, in real time, acoustic characteristics of an audio environment are provided. The audio environment may include a plurality of sound sources that convert input signals to first sound streams and may include undesired objects producing second sound streams. The method may include monitoring one or more of the input signals and generating, by a plurality of acoustic sensors, one or more output signals corresponding to the first sound streams and the second sound streams. The method may also include calculating attenuation and delay values between the input signals and the output signals. Further, the method may include using the attenuation and delay values to identify portions of the output signals corresponding to second sound streams.

  • Publication number: 20070173749
Abstract: A massage mechanism includes a housing containing substantially uni-directional roller components. The rollers are able to rotate in one direction, but either not easily or not at all in the opposite direction. Each roller of a total of two rollers is able to rotate in a direction that is opposite of the other roller. The effect of the described configuration is that as the roller massage device moves across a skin surface of a patient, a leading edge roller is able to roll, while a trailing edge roller is held stationary, or substantially stationary. The stationary roller on the trailing edge of the roller massage device pushes against the skin, generating a skin fold. The skin fold can be further generated and magnified by the provision of a vacuum pressure within a chamber of the roller massage device, suctioning the skin up into the device, working in conjunction with the rollers. In addition, an electromagnetic force can be applied to the skin fold.

  • Publication number: 20060044136
Abstract: A fiber optic based security system is disposed on or in a structure such as a wall, roof, floor, ceiling, container, and/or ground. The security system contains an optical cable having first and second ends and an interface unit connected to both ends of the optical cable. The interface unit generates a specific light signal injected into the first end. The interface unit receives the specific light signal from the second end after the specific light signal propagates through the optical cable. The interface unit then determines if the specific light signal received falls within a given threshold and outputs an alarming signal indicating if the specific light signal received falls outside of the given threshold. An alarm system receives the alarming signal from the interface unit. The alarm system is activated if the interface unit indicates that the specific light signal falls outside of the given threshold.

  • Publication number: 20040137158
Abstract: A method for preparing a noble metal surface on an industrial substrate for interaction with an organic material. The method includes covering the substrate with a sequence of metal layers which may include one or more adhesion layers, one or more diffusion barriers, and ends with a noble metal layer. In an optional second step, the noble metal layer may be annealed in order to stabilize its crystal structure. Finally, the noble metal layer is subjected to one or more ion bombardment steps, which are effective to clean and precisely smooth the top surface of the noble metal layer.

  • Patent number: 4040855
Abstract: By using as the lightweight aggregate, in the manufacture of lightweight concrete, polystyrene-bead materials of particularly controlled characteristics in regard to bead size and coefficient of variation of absolute volume, there is obtained a substantial improvement in regard to the accuracy with which the density of the product lightweight concrete can be controlled or preordained. Since the strength and insulation-value properties are closely related to the density, the improvement aids in the design and production of more economical parts.

  • Patent number: 3963998
Abstract: A variable bandwidth tunable directional filter to directionally route a broadband signal between an input and an output microwave transmission line for controlling and processing signals in data handling systems. The transmission lines are waveguides directionally coupled to a ring resonator having frequency response characteristics at resonance of a band-pass filter. The ring resonator directionally coupled to transmission lines is capable of resonating with waves progressing unidirectionally. Tuning to resonance is achieved by adjusting the guided wave in the ring by the insertion into the ring of flat dielectric material which also provides for a broadband impedance match of the coupled circuits. Broadening of the filter bandwidth is achieved by additional attenuation in the ring resonator which also decreases the insertion loss due to the coupling of the resonator to the waveguides.
