  • Patent number: 9408063
Abstract: Embodiments of systems and methods for jurisdiction-based adaptive communication are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a wireless device may be configured to store different jurisdiction identifiers, each jurisdiction identifier in association with a stored set of wireless communication operation constraints. In some such embodiments, the wireless device may receive a jurisdiction identifier nominally representative of a jurisdiction in which communication hardware of the wireless device is located, and may validate or invalidate the received jurisdiction identifier. If the received jurisdiction identifier is validated, the wireless device may apply the stored set of wireless communication operation constraints corresponding to the received jurisdiction identifier to adapt the operation of the communication hardware of the wireless device. Other embodiments may be disclosed and/or claimed.

  • Publication number: 20140214314
Abstract: In a navigation system and method, location-aware adjustments may be made to the accuracy and/or power of the navigation system by changing at least one setting of a navigation system receiver in response to at least one characteristic of a navigation route and/or an estimated current position of the receiver. By providing location-aware adjustments, the accuracy may be increased when a higher accuracy is desired and may be decreased when a lower accuracy is sufficient based on the receiver location. A higher accuracy setting may be used, for example, when the estimated current position of a navigation system receiver is within the vicinity of a waypoint along the navigation route and a lower accuracy setting may be used at other times to reduce power consumption. Of course, many alternatives, variations, and modifications are possible without departing from this embodiment.

  • Publication number: 20140195198
Abstract: The present application discloses devices, systems and methods for establishing and utilizing a UV sensing network to harness the efficacy of distributed UV sensing to produce improved accuracy of UV exposure measurement using mobile devices. This may be accomplished by “crowd sourcing”, i.e. having multiple devices work collaboratively to measure the UV exposure. The collaboration can be implemented in many potential ways, such as, using a server based architecture where devices connect to a specific “UV measurements server” to provide measurements and receive aggregate estimated exposure levels, and/or by using a peer-to-peer architecture, where devices in a specific region creates a local ad-hoc UV sensing network.

  • Publication number: 20140092238
Abstract: The present application discloses device and system embodiments that address mobile device integration considerations for various categories of UV sensors, including cameras, photodiodes, and chemical sensors. The UV sensors may use the functionalities of the existing in-built sensors in conventional mobile devices, and/or integrate additional components specific to UV sensing. By optimally positioning the sensors, UV sensing and other collateral functionalities (e.g., charging a photovoltaic cell integrated with the mobile device) can be realized in parallel.

  • Publication number: 20090180451
Abstract: A novel and useful apparatus for and method of coordinating the allocation of transmission and reception availability and/or unavailability periods for use in a communications device incorporating collocated multiple radios. The mechanism provide both centralized and distributed coordination to enable the coordination (e.g., to achieve coexistence) of multiple radio access communication devices (RACDs) collocated in a single device such as a mobile station. A distributed activity coordinator modifies the activity pattern of multiple RACDs. The activity pattern comprises a set of radio access specific modes of operation, (e.g., IEEE 802.16 Normal, Sleep, Scan or Idle modes, 3GPP GSM/EDGE operation mode (PTM, IDLE, Connected, DTM modes), etc.) and a compatible set of wake-up events, such as reception and transmission availability periods.
