  • Publication number: 20170182689
Abstract: A low constant pressure co-injection molding machine forms molded parts by injecting molten thermoplastic material into a mold cavity at low, substantially constant pressures. As a result, the low constant pressure injection molding machine includes a mold formed of easily machineable material that is less costly and faster to manufacture than typical injection molds. Co-injection of thin-walled parts having an L/T ratio >100, with embedded sustainable materials, such as polylactic acid (PLA), starch, post-consumer recyclables (PCR), and post-industrial recyclables (PIR) isolated from surfaces by barrier layers of leach-resistant material having a thickness less than 0.5 mm, is possible.

  • Publication number: 20140377512
Abstract: A method of constructing a package having printed indicia of acceptable quality includes providing at least one layer of foamed thin film and printing the indicia on the printed surface by applying ink to a printer surface and contacting the printed surface with the inked printer surface to coat the printed surface with ink. The layer of foamed thin film comprises a bio-based content of between about 10% and about 100%, a caliper of between 10 and 250 microns, and between 5% to 50% density reduction as compared to a non-foamed thin film of substantially the same caliper and composition, wherein a first surface of the at least one layer of foamed thin film is the printed surface of the package.

  • Patent number: 8871319
Abstract: Disclosed herein are flexible barrier packages composed of materials that are substantially free of virgin, petroleum-based compounds. The flexible barrier packages contain a sealant that has a biobased content of at least about 85%. The sealant is laminated to an outer substrate that has a biobased content of at least about 95% via a tie layer that can further include an extruded substrate. The extruded substrate has a biobased content of at least about 85%. Ink optionally can be deposited on either side of the outer substrate, and the exterior surface of the outer substrate can further include a lacquer. A barrier material layer can be deposited or laminated between the first tie layer and the outer substrate. The flexible barrier packages of the invention are useful for enclosing a consumer product, for example, food, drink, wipes, shampoo, conditioner, skin lotion, shave lotion, liquid soap, bar soap, toothpaste, and detergent.

  • Patent number: 8426521
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a composition substantially free of polyethylene, wherein the composition includes a thermoplastic material having certain specified mechanical properties, and about 2 wt. % to about 25 wt. % (based on the total weight of the composition) of an olefin mixture that consists essentially of a 30:70 to 70:30 weight ratio of a homogeneous ethylene-alpha olefin interpolymer and a propylene-based elastomer having at least 75 wt. % units derived from propylene and about 10 wt. % to about 25 wt. % units derived from a C2 or a C4-10 alpha olefin. The specified olefin mixture unexpectedly imparts to the overall composition mechanical properties (such as impact strength, for example) heretofore unattainable. These mechanical properties can be expected to be tailored to suit the end-use expected of the composition.
