  • Patent number: 5291614
Abstract: A personal computer system includes a digital signal processor (DSP) subsystem that is connectable to a plurality of application specific hardware devices. A single DSP is operable under a DSP real-time operating system (RTOS) to concurrently handle a plurality of different signal processing functions on a real-time basis. A DSP data store is connected to the DSP and to the personal computer and includes addressable locations that emulate addressable I/O registers associated with the application specific hardware devices to enable the personal computer to run a plurality of application programs controlling operation of the hardware devices. Performance is enhanced for I/O read and write operations by delaying halting of the DSP allowing such operations to complete in a cycle during which the DSP is not accessing the data store.

  • Patent number: 5265233
Abstract: An improved memory model and implementation is disclosed. The memory model includes a Total Store Ordering (TSO) and Partial Store Ordering (PSO) memory model to provide a partial order for the memory operations which are issued by multiple processors. The TSO memory model includes a FIFO Store Buffer for Store, and Atomic Load-Store operations. The Load operations are not placed in the FIFO Store Buffer. The Load operation checks for a value stored in the same location in the FIFO Store Buffer; if no such value is found, then requested value is returned from memory. The PSO model also includes a Store Buffer for Store, and Atomic Load-Store operations. However, unlike the TSO model, the Store Buffer in the PSO model is not FIFO. The processors in the PSO model may issue the Store and Atomic Load-Store in a certain order; however, such operations may be executed by memory out of the order issued by the processors. The execution order is assured only by address matching and the STBAR operation.

  • Patent number: 4698068
Abstract: A fire igniting device which includes a rod of an ignitable material, particularly magnesium, and has a pyrophoric element adhered to the rod along its length. A head is secured to the rod, and also may be fitted to a case, so that a spent rod can be removed and discarded from a handle, and another rod installed. The case is adapted to receive the rod during periods of non-use, to protect it from contaminants; and, during use, the case may be fitted to the other end of the head so as to increase the effective length of the head and provide a more comfortable grip to the user. A metal striker for striking the pyrophoric element is conveniently tethered to the case. Magnesium shavings are scraped from the rod, and are then ignited by striking the pyrophoric element with the striker. The fire igniting device may be incorporated into the handle of a survival knife, whereby the handle functions as a case for the magnesium rod during periods of non-use.

  • Patent number: 4696338
Abstract: Heat storage and transfer system and method in which a liquid-solid phase change material and a liquid-vapor phase change material selected for coaction with each other are disposed in a container with a body of the liquid phase of the liquid-vapor material in continuous contact with a body of the liquid phase of the liquid-solid material for superior heat transfer between the materials for giving up and transferring sensible heat and liquid to solid phase change latent heat to vaporize liquid-vapor phase change material and vapor to liquid phase change latent heat to a condenser/heat exchanger and also for superior heat transfer from a heat source such as a solar or electric heater by giving up the heat of condensation of a vapor phase to a solid-liquid material which accepts the heat as sensible heat and as heat of melting.

  • Patent number: 4309980
Abstract: Closed heat transfer system including a body of water in a first container, a body of aluminum compound in a second container and a conduit connecting the containers, the system being operative in a first step to evaporate water from the first container to cool it by withdrawing heat of vaporization which is supplied to the water at relatively low temperature and to react the water vapor with the aluminum compound in the second container to generate heat at relatively high temperature and to combine with the water so that the water vapor pressure remains low and water continues to evaporate from the body of water for continued cooling, and the system operating in a second stage by supply of heat to the reaction products of the water and aluminum compound to restore the aluminum compound to its initial condition by driving off water which is condensed and returned to the body of water in the first container.
