Abstract: A load balancer detects a server failure, and sends a failure notification message to the remaining servers. In response, one or more of the remaining servers may autonomically adjust their configuration parameters, thereby allowing the remaining servers to better handle the increased load caused by the server failure. One or more of the servers may also include a performance measurement mechanism that measures performance before and after an autonomic adjustment of the configuration parameters to determine whether and how much the autonomic adjustments improved the system performance. In this manner server computer systems may autonomically compensate for the failure of another server computer system that was sharing the workload.

Abstract: A fan chandelier having a central body bearing lighting units with built-in fans, the lighting units preferably disposed at the ends of arms arrayed radially in satellite fashion about the central body. The central body, which also or alternatively may include lights and a fan, distributes power to drive all the fans and lights. The fans concealed within the satellite lighting units preferably have separately controllable, individual electric motors and may include heater strips to warm the air. In an alternate embodiment, the satellite fans may couple through flexible cables and a transmission within the central body to a single motor. The entire array creates air movement as effective as that of a ceiling fan of similar size, while also lighting a room in a fashion aesthetically pleasing enough to serve as a chandelier, complete with optional light refracting crystals.

Abstract: This invention describes gas-solid, liquid-solid and gas-solid-liquid processes in microchannels devices including such processes as heterogeneous catalysis, particle formation, particle attrition, particle separation and adsorption or desorption of selected species. Various processes can be enhanced by the unique properties of microchannels such as the predominance of laminar flow, high rates of shear, high rates of heat transfer and high rates of mass transfer. Also encompassed by this invention are methods for the introduction to and removal from microchannels of particle containing fluid streams.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for the safe shut down of an operating system. The invention utilizes a shutdown-monitoring program that is running in an initiator operating system to periodically transmit and pass-through SCSI command to a SCSI target to determine if a shutdown operations is to be performed upon the operating system. In response to the SCSI command the SCSI target returns data back to the initiator operating system, wherein the shutdown-monitoring program analyzes the data. In the event that the shutdown-monitoring program determines that the operating system is to be shut down, then an operating system shutdown is initiated using at least one appropriate API that is provided by the operating system.

In one embodiment a first air interface is used to initiate communication between a wireless client and a remote server at least partially using a first wireless access point. The server sends the wireless client a stub of a distributed object. The stub is used to instantiate an object class. The object class defines an interface that the remote client can use to communicate with the remote server using an upper layer interface. The distributed object stub also provides an implementation of a software radio configuration for a set of lower protocol layers in a second air interface. The wireless client can thereby communicate with a second wireless access point using said second air interface protocol.
