  • Publication number: 20060068271
Abstract: A simplified direct oxidation fuel cell system is disclosed. The fuel cell is constructed in such a manner that fuel is added to the cell anode as it is consumed and water is evaporated off at cell cathode so that there is no need for recirculation of unreacted fuel at the cell anode or water at the cell cathode. In addition, carbon dioxide generated from the anodic reaction is passively vented out of the system by using a CO2 gas permeable membrane material integrated as part of the anode chamber construction. It is thus possible that, the CO2 separation from the anode fluid occurs without the recirculation of the anode fluid outside the anode chamber. In one embodiment, the simplified direct oxidation fuel cell includes a gas permeable, liquid impermeable membrane placed in close proximity to the anode to perform the carbon dioxide separation.

  • Publication number: 20060008862
Abstract: A method is provided for determining the activity of an enzyme which releases methylumbelliferone (MU) from an MU-containing substrate wherein the enzyme has a pH optimum below the pKa of MU comprising: contacting a sample suspected of containing the enzyme with the MU-containing substrate at a pH suitable for activity of the enzyme to allow release of MU by the enzyme; contacting the sample with light of a wavelength in the range of about 310 nm to about 350 nm; determining fluorescence produced by the released MU, thereby determining the activity of the enzyme. This real time method provides improved diagnostic methods, for example for diseases associated with an abnormal level of activity of a glycosidase. The real time assay also can be used to screen compounds for their ability to modulate enzyme activity using MU-containing substrates.

  • Patent number: 6985085
Abstract: A crane safety system providing a view of the operation of the crane to the crane operator is disclosed. The crane safety system comprises: (1) a camera sub-system having a monitor providing images to the operator, (2) a sensor sub-system for determining the presence of an object in the path of the cranes operating trajectory, and (3) a camera control device that directs and controls the camera to capture images and display the images on the monitor, the images selected by the control device based upon actions taken by the crane operator, or caused by events occurring proximal to the camera boom that are detected by the sensor sub-system. The control device further controls the sensor sub-system to select signals for processing to identify the proximity and direction of movement of the object relative to the crane. If the object is within a pre-defined distance, the control device sends an alarm signal to the monitor.

  • Patent number: 6893344
Abstract: A secondary game in communication with a primary gaming machine, is preferably based on a sport, namely American football. The present invention, unlike previous secondary games is triggered in response to both predefined winning and non-winning primary game outcomes. The secondary game awards a bonus pay out in response to a player achieving a predefined bonus event. The bonus event may be scoring a touchdown, getting a first down or any desired football related event. Once the secondary game is triggered by one or more predefined winning primary game outcomes, a random number generator selects a secondary game football related outcome (e.g. five yard gain, two yard loss, etc). In a preferred embodiment, the football outcome is revealed on a display depicting video football footage. Moreover, if the primary game outcome is a predefined non-winning outcome, the secondary game is instructed to advance the football a pre-established modest distance.

  • Publication number: 20040015132
Abstract: A medical system method comprises steps in using portable medication dispensing and data taking devices for use by an out-patient, and which communicate with a base station, typically within the patients' home. The base station communicates periodically with a remote control station which downloads a medical schedule to the base station and thereby to the portable devices, and also receives usage and medical state information from the patient through the portable devices and the base station. A transmission repetition protocol is used which provides a high degree of confidence that patient information will be received by the remote station. The remote station monitors patient activities and status and provides reports as well as refill requests when supplies are low. Presentations to the patient are provided by Internet or other simplified technique including showing history graphics while describing important features and recommending purchases of supplies and medications.
