    Abstract: A method for making modified poly(ethylene oxide) by graft polymerizing thereto organic monomers containing a trialkoxy silane functional group or a moiety that reacts with water to form a silanol group, such as methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane, onto the poly(ethylene oxide) is disclosed. The graft polymerization is accomplished by mixing the poly(ethylene oxide), the silane-containing monomer(s) and an initiator and applying heat. Preferably, the method is a reactive-extrusion process. The resulting modified poly(ethylene oxide) has improved water absorption characteristics and melt processabilities and may be used to make thermally processed articles, such as fibers, films and foams, that have improved properties over articles similarly processed from unmodified poly(ethylene oxide).

    Abstract: An absorbent article is constructed with a discontinuous absorbent core strengthened by a reinforcing scrim material embedded in the absorbent material of the core. The scrim facilitates maintenance of the integrity of the core in use although the core may be weakened by the provision of ventilation openings or other discontinuities. The scrim also helps to keep the proper location of the absorbent core within the article. Moreover, use of scrim or other reinforcing material facilitates the manufacture of the absorbent core and of the absorbent article.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for forming and unloading a completed stack of articles. An assembly station includes a rotatable turret from which at least one stacker arm projects. The turret rotates to each of a number of article loading positions to sequentially load articles onto the arm in a desired order. The turret is then advanced to allow the articles to be concurrently unloaded from the stacker arm at an unloading position. In an automated disc drive manufacturing environment, the articles comprise respective numbers of magnetic recording discs and intervening disc spacers which are arranged into a disc/spacer stack as the stacker arm is advanced to a number of disc feeder and spacer feeder stations. The completed disc/spacer stack is then unloaded onto a spindle motor hub. Additional arms preferably project from the turret so that, as the turret rotates, multiple stacks are simultaneously formed and sequentially unloaded.

A disc pack subassembly is mounted on the base and is configured to support a disc pack and an actuator subassembly is mounted on the base and is configured to support an actuator assembly. A drive mechanism merges the disc pack subassembly together with the actuator subassembly whereby transducer heads in the actuator subassembly are positioned on disc surfaces of the disc pack. At least one of the subassemblies is releasably mounted to the base and the subassembly can be replaced for assembly differing disc storage systems or upon failure of the subassembly.

More specifically, the base contact structure at least partially surrounds the emitter and has integral contact pads which extend away from the emitter. Under the preferred post-drying conditions, bonding of the previously wet paper fibers takes place to lock in the desirable printing characteristics and to prevent heat roughening on the offset press.
