  • Publication number: 20090279158
Abstract: Microfluidic pixels are utilized to produce large format displays (billboards) that are both digitally controllable and are light weight. Each pixel includes a wall having a front (display) surface, and a microfluidic system including a reservoir disposed behind the wall, a colorant fluid, a transparent display chamber disposed in front of the wall, a conduit, and a fluid actuator. The reservoir includes a reservoir chamber including a deformable wall, and the fluid actuator includes a mechanism for selectively displacing the deformable wall such that a portion of the first colorant fluid is transferred between the first reservoir and the first display chamber through the first conduit, whereby the pixel's appearance changes between a background appearance determined by the color (e.g., white) of the front wall surface, and a “colored” appearance determined by the amount and color of the colorant fluid disposed in the display chamber.

  • Publication number: 20090159822
Abstract: An improved microvalve is described. The microvalve includes a corresponding actuation aperture in an actuation aperture layer. A control fluid flows through the actuation aperture. The flow of the control fluid is controlled by an electric field typically applied via a charge distribution near an actuation aperture layer. In one embodiment, the electric field may adjust the opening and closing of the actuation aperture thereby controlling the flow of the control fluid. In a second embodiment, the control fluid is an electrorheological fluid where the electric field controls the viscosity of the ER fluid thereby controlling fluid flow through the actuation aperture. In both embodiments the flow of the control fluid controls stretching of a flexible membrane formed along the wall of a conduit through which a fluid to be controlled flows. The stretching of the flexible membrane controlling the flow of the main fluid to be controlled.

  • Patent number: 7473031
Abstract: Thermal sensors for calorimetry can include vanadium oxide, heavily p-doped amorphous silicon, or other materials with high temperature coefficients of resistivity. Such thermal sensors can have low noise equivalent temperature difference (NETD). For example, a thermal sensor with NETD no greater than 100 ?K over a bandwidth range of approximately 3 Hz or more can include a thermistor including vanadium oxide sputtered at room temperature under conditions that yield primarily V2O5; more specifically, the NETD can be no greater than 35 ?K, or even 10 ?K over a bandwidth range of approximately 3 Hz or more. If a low noise thermal sensor has NETD no greater than 50 ?K over such a bandwidth range, a low noise output circuitry connected to its thermistor can provide an electrical output signal that includes information about input thermal signal peaks with amplitude of approximately 100 ?K.

  • Patent number: 7413706
Abstract: A measurement operation, such as a calorimetry measurement, is performed using a measurement array and a replaceable passivation membrane (e.g., a parylene membrane). The passivation membrane is used to cover the measurement array to provide temporary electrical and chemical passivation, while still allowing measurement of the parameter of interest (e.g., temperature, in a calorimetry measurement). By only replacing the membrane instead of the entire measurement array between measurement operations, the cost of the measurements can be significantly reduced over conventional methods. The passivation membrane can be mounted on a frame to simplify handling of the membrane.

  • Publication number: 20080149183
Abstract: An improved microvalve is described. The microvalve is formed such that the walls of the microvalve are formed from a gel material. Typically, the microvalve includes open flow paths, often holes, through a gel layer. An electric field is applied in regions where fluid flow is undesirable. The electric field compresses the gel closing the flow path thereby preventing further fluid flow.

  • Patent number: 7354787
Abstract: A MEMS system including a fixed electrode and a suspended moveable electrode that is controllable over a wide range of motion. In traditional systems where an fixed electrode is positioned under the moveable electrode, the range of motion is limited because the support structure supporting the moveable electrode becomes unstable when the moveable electrode moves too close to the fixed electrode. By repositioning the fixed electrode from being directly underneath the moving electrode, a much wider range of controllable motion is achievable. Wide ranges of controllable motion are particularly important in optical switching applications.

  • Patent number: 7342596
Abstract: A system for printing is described. The system uses at least one cantilever, and more typically a plurality of cantilever to transfer charge, either to or from a dielectric surface. The resulting charge distribution represents an image. Toner deposited over the dielectric surface is attracted to the charged portions of the dielectric. Thus the toner also forms the image. The toner image is then transferred and affixed to a printing surface.

  • Patent number: 7324717
Abstract: A microlens structure is mounted directly onto the upper surface of a packaged VCSEL device and positioned to locate microlenses directly over corresponding VCSEL elements. The microlens structure includes a block-like pedestal having a lower surface that faces the upper surface of the VSCEL device. The microlenses are formed in a central region of the lower surface, and several legs (stand-offs) extend from peripheral edges of the lower surface. During assembly, the VCSEL device is positioned under the microlens structure such that each microlens is aligned over its corresponding VCSEL element, and then raised until the legs contact the upper surface of the VCSEL device. The legs serve to self-align the microlenses to the VCSEL device, and are sized to maintain an optimal distance between the microlenses and the VCSEL elements. The pedestal is attached to a carrier plate that is secured to an IC package housing the VCSEL device.

  • Patent number: 7284324
Abstract: An out-of-plane micro-structure which can be used for on-chip integration of high-Q inductors and transformers places the magnetic field direction parallel to the substrate plane without requiring high aspect ratio processing. The photolithographically patterned coil structure includes an elastic member having an intrinsic stress profile. The intrinsic stress profile biases a free portion away from the substrate forming a loop winding. An anchor portion remains fixed to the substrate. The free portion end becomes a second anchor portion which may be connected to the substrate via soldering or plating. A series of individual coil structures can be joined via their anchor portions to form inductors and transformers.
