  • Publication number: 20040154958
Abstract: This invention relates to base stocks and base oils that exhibit an unexpected combination of high viscosity index (130 or greater) and a ratio of measured-to-theoretical high-shear/low-temperature viscosity at −30 C. or lower and the methods of making them. Specifically, the present invention relates to low-viscosity base stocks and base oils as used in functional fluids. More specifically, the present invention relates to automatic transmission fluids showing surprising low temperature Brookfield viscosities and methods to produce them.

  • Publication number: 20040154957
Abstract: This invention relates to lubricants comprising base stocks and base oils that exhibit an unexpected combination of high viscosity index (130 or greater) and a ratio of measured-to-theoretical high-shear/low-temperature viscosity at −30 C or lower and the methods of making them. Specifically, the present invention relates to novel high viscosity index, low-viscosity lubricants usable as wide-temperature lubricants, for example hyrdraulic oils, comprising novel low-viscosity base stocks, with improved performance in low-temperature viscosity, and methods to produce them.

  • Publication number: 20040129603
Abstract: This invention relates to base stocks and base oils that exhibit an unexpected combination of high viscosity index (130 or greater) and a ratio of measured-to-theoretical high-shear/low-temperature viscosity at −30C or lower and the methods of making them. Specifically, the present invention relates to low-volatility/low-viscosity lubricant base stocks, lubricant base stocks and base oils, formulated lubricant compositions or functional fluids comprising these base stocks and methods of making them. More particularly, this invention relates to lubricant compositions of low-temperature flow capability and low viscosity for passenger car motor lubricants of SAE 0W-XX grade (where XX=40 or lower), methods for optimizing fuel economy using the same, and methods or processes to produce them.

  • Publication number: 20040119046
Abstract: This invention relates to functional fluids incorporating base stocks and base oils that exhibit an unexpected combination of high viscosity index (130 or greater) and a ratio of measured-to-theoretical high-shear/low-temperature viscosity at −30C or lower, and the methods of making them. Specifically, the present invention relates to low-volatility/low-viscosity functional fluids comprising novel base stocks, with particular performance advantages in lubricating materials under high thermal stress, and methods to produce them.

  • Patent number: 6317654
Abstract: A model to predict the quality of a lubricant base stock for use in a plurality of products having a plurality of viscosities. The compositional model is based on a quantitative analysis of key compositional parameters and performance criteria for the plurality of products representing the plurality of viscosities. The compositional model provides a method for making a lubricant base stock to be used in manufacturing a lubricant for a particular application from a refinery stream wherein the lubricant base stock and the refinery stream are characterizable according to a plurality of compositional components common to the base stock and to the refinery stream. This method begins with determining the acceptable region and adjusting for viscosity variations.

  • Patent number: 6295485
Abstract: A model to predict the quality of a lubricant base stock for use in a plurality of products having a plurality of viscosities. The compositional model is based on a quantitative analysis of key compositional parameters and performance criteria for the plurality of products representing the plurality of viscosities. The compositional model predicts whether the composition of a new lubricant base stock is similar or dissimilar to known lubricant base stock compositions that have previously passed or failed performance tests. New base stock compositions, then, are evaluated in light of base stocks that have demonstrated acceptable performance in a plurality of products. The compositional model also predicts whether a combination of refinery streams can be blended for use in manufacturing a lubricant base stock.
