Abstract: A method of managing communications in a communications network and a program product therefore. Users provide lists of expected future locations, e.g., Serial Ringing (SR) lists. As each call traverses a user's SR-list to contact a respective user, the user's current location (i.e., the endpoint at which a call is answered) is noted and the list is automatically altered (e.g., reordered or timeouts shortened) to shorten the time between receiving an incoming call at the system and ringing the answering endpoint. Thereafter, the altered SR-list is used to locate the respective user.

Abstract: A Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communications system, a method of managing a communications network in such a system and a program product therefore. The system/network includes an ENERGY STAR (E-star) aware softswitch and E-star compliant communications devices at system endpoints. The E-star aware softswitch allows E-star compliant communications devices to enter and remain in power saving mode. The E-star aware softswitch spools messages and forwards only selected messages (e.g., calls) to the devices in power saving mode. When the E-star compliant communications devices exit power saving mode, the E-star aware softswitch forwards spooled messages.

Abstract: A method for backing up data stored on a mobile customer premises equipment comprising the steps of formatting the data at the mobile customer premises equipment into fields, transmitting the data with a user ID from the mobile customer premises equipment across a mobile network to a server. The server stores the data for retrieval, retrieves the data from the server in response to one of an expiration of time and request from the mobile customer premises equipment; and transmits the data to the mobile customer premises equipment.

Abstract: A method for establishing a call in a telecommunications network that has first and second packet network sections, a wide area packet network, and a TDM transit network section. Subscribers'terminal equipment is addressable by directory numbers, and calls to subscribers are always routed through the TDM transit network. During TDM call setup at least one message or information element is conveyed to the second packet network section which is indicative of the first terminal equipment's packet capabilities and/or an address of a first controlling device controlling the call in the first packet network section. The message or information element is received at a second controlling device controlling the call in the second packet network section. Using the information extracted from the message or information element a second connection between the first and second terminal equipment through the wide area packet network is established by the controlling devices.

Abstract: A method allowing a subscriber to use call handling features on a call by call basis defines a plurality of feature profiles, each including a number of call handling features. The method stores the feature profiles either in a customer premises equipment or in a related switch, and activates one of the feature profiles by selecting one of the feature profiles and applying the call handling features in the feature profile to the calls as long as the feature profile is activated.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods and apparatuses for speech signal encoding and decoding. In accordance with the invention, a discrete time speech signal is encoded by identifying a speech element in the speech signal. If the speech element is identified for the first time, the encoder (108) creates a unique tag representing the speech element and an associating between the speech element and the unique tag in a memory and transmits the speech element in discrete time form and the tag and an indication that the tag is to represent the speech element to a decoder (118). Abstract: In a telecommunication network having a data management system, a method for modifying the operating system of a telecommunication terminal device connected to the network. An operating system modified according to the method allows the telecommunication terminal device to check for errors in a data transmission. If an error in the data transmission is found, connection between the terminal device and the network's data management system is aborted, a new connection between the terminal device and the network's data management system is made, and the data transmission is repeated.
