  • Patent number: 4100638
Abstract: A machine for forging the leading end of a metal screw blank comprising two pairs of complementary dies, one die of each pair of which is stationary and the other movable to and from the stationary die. The stationary dies are supported on opposite sides of a stationary die support and the movable dies on discrete movable die supports at opposite sides of the stationary die support. The movable die supports are connected to form a movable die assembly, are supported by linear ball bearings on cylindrical ways and are reciprocated as a unit by a pitman connected to a crankshaft by roller bearings, thus providing for the production of a forged blank upon each 180.degree. rotation of the crankshaft. The movable die supports are adjustable relative to the stationary die support and the roller bearings have preload adjustments that make it possible to maintain a precise clearance between the respective dies of each pair in their closed position within one hundred twenty seven thousandths of a millimeter (0.

  • Patent number: 4099560
Abstract: A marine riser, which is hung from a drilling platform floating on a body of water and connected at its lower end to a wellhead, is buoyantly tensioned by one or more float cans with open bottoms. These float cans are connected at their upper end to the riser to which air under pressure is controllably supplied. The pressurized air blows out the water in each can to achieve the desired buoyancy. The float can may having an air dump valve interconnected with similar valves in the other cans. The function of these valves is to release the pressurized air in the can if the riser parts. At the upper end of the riser is a slip joint, which may include safety water-dampening gear to further reduce upward motion of a parted riser. The optional dampening gear comprises an annular piston formed by the upper section of the slip joint that forces water through ports in the exterior of the lower section of the slip joint as the riser below the slip joint moves upward.

  • Patent number: 4097355
Abstract: The electrodes of a water purification cell are immersed in the water to be sterilized. The current through the cell is kept constant by varying the resistance of an emitter-collector circuit of a transistor connected in series with the cell to compensate for changes in the cell's internal resistance. The voltage across the cell is monitored by two threshold circuits to determine if the conductivity of the water is within an allowable conductivity range. If the conductivity falls outside the range, a light-emitting diode is energized. The light-emitting diode is also energized if the voltage of the battery supplying the power for the cell falls below a given value. If no water is present in the supply line to the cell, a switching transistor is blocked, thereby disconnecting most of the equipment from one side of the battery.

  • Patent number: 4097039
Abstract: An apparatus for laying an elongate strip in substantially uniform layers and side-by-side rows includes a conveyer assembly for receiving a generally horizontally traveling material and for delivering the same to the upper end of a hollow, generally vertically extending, universally pivotable feed chute. The lower end of the feed chute is coupled to a first slider which is mounted for reciprocal sliding movement in a first horizontal direction on a second slider mounted in turn on the main frame for reciprocal sliding movement in a second horizontal direction normal to the first. A drive assembly reciprocates the first slider at a first rate of speed and simultaneously reciprocates the second slider in the second direction and at a slower speed rate for delivering the material in the desired pattern from the lower end of the feed chute. A speed matching assembly adjusts the speed of the strip laying apparatus to that of the strip received from other process machinery.
