    Abstract: A method for making an aluminum oxide (Al2O3) component utilizes an amount of aluminum oxide in particle form. The aluminum oxide initially has less than about 100 parts per million of sodium and less than about 600 parts per million of silica. The aluminum oxide is ground with media that comprise aluminum oxide ceramic pieces that have less than about 200 parts per million of sodium to deagglomerate and reduce the particle size of the aluminum oxide. The ground aluminum oxide is placed into a slurry, and a low sodium grade binder is added to the slurry. The slurry is dried to provide an aluminum oxide powder having a sodium content that is less than about 200 parts per million. The powder may then be formed into a certain shape and thermally treated to produce an aluminum oxide component having a low sodium and low silica content.

Preferably, the ultraviolet light-absorbing compound is anthracene or its derivatives. Anthracenes having pendant alkoxy groups are preferred for use with light wavelengths greater than 360 nm, particularly 9,10-dimethoxy-2-ethyl anthracene.

    Abstract: A vapor distillation system sprays a mixture of liquids to be distilled into an evacuated vaporizer chamber. The low boiling point components of the mixture will be vaporized while the remainder of the mixture will collect at the bottom of the vaporizer chamber. The collected liquid is recirculated and heated. The recirculating liquid is discharged, and fresh mixture is introduced, as a function of the sensed temperature of the recirculating liquid. The vapor is transferred to a condenser chamber having a water spray head so that the chilled spray condenses the vapor. Both the condenser chamber and the vaporizer chamber have fluid level control systems.

    Abstract: An glass manufacturing process and apparatus having a vertical air-cooled electric furnace and a transverse air-cooled refiner section. The furnace and the refiner are provided with a plurality of molybdenum plate electrode cartridge assemblies. Molten glass is removed from the furnace refiner section by means of a plurality of basin cylinders symmetrically disposed within the transverse refiner. An extruder mechanism accepts molten glass from each basin cylinder and applies the molten glass to a pair of extrusion rolls and onto a molten tin bath. The extrusion rolls are eccentrically pivoted off-center such that the separation distance between them can be varied. A cutting frame is then lowered over the tin bath such that the molten glass sheet is held firmly while it is cut into lite sizes by a cutting mechanism. After cutting, a transfer unit having suction orifices is lowered over the glass sheet and lifts the newly cut glass sheet either to an annealing stage or to a tempering stage.
