  • Patent number: 11333816
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system are disclosed for increasing light extraction efficiency in a light guide optical system. The light guide optical system may comprise a light emitting source. The light emitting source may be, for example, a light-emitting diode (LED) or plurality of LEDS. The light guide optical system may also comprise a light guide plate (LGP). The LGP may include light extraction features located on surfaces of the LGP. The LGP may also include a shaped injection surface on an input surface of the LGP. The shaped injection surface may be angled to deviate near-parallel light emitted from the LED to enable the near-parallel light emitted from the LED to be extracted from the LGP via the light extraction features. The shaped injection surface may be a split edge (i.e. a V-groove) or a curved edge.

  • Publication number: 20220113462
Abstract: In a projection display system, a light-emitting diode (LED) can generate unpolarized light. A light guide can receive the unpolarized light from a perimeter of the light guide and guide the unpolarized light between a light emission surface and an opposing surface as guided light. The light guide can include a plurality of light-extraction features that can direct a portion of the guided light out of the light guide through the light emission surface as unpolarized emitted light. A polarizing film can reflect at least some of a first polarization state of the unpolarized emitted light into the light guide through the light emission surface and can transmit at least some of a second polarization state of the unpolarized emitted light through the polarizing film to form a polarized light beam. An angular reduction film can reduce a range of propagation angles of the polarized light beam.

  • Publication number: 20220113613
Abstract: In a projection display system, a polarizing beamsplitter can split an unpolarized light beam into a first internal beam and a second internal beam, which can have polarization states that are orthogonal. A polarization rotator, such as a half-wave plate, can rotate a plane of polarization of at least one of the first internal beam or the second internal beam. A beam aligner, such as a second polarizing beamsplitter, can change a propagation direction of at least one of the first internal beam or the second internal beam. The polarization rotator and the beam aligner each can adjust at least one of the first or second internal beams such that the first internal beam forms a first exiting beam and the second internal beam forms a second exiting beam. The first exiting beam and the second exiting beam can be adjacent and parallel and have parallel polarization states.

  • Patent number: 11189601
Abstract: A mounting substrate has a patterned metal layer defining a plurality of top metal bond pads for bonding to bottom metal bond pads of LED dies. A solder mask layer is formed over the mounting substrate, where the mask has openings that expose the top metal bond pads and protects metal traces on the substrate. The mask layer is a highly reflective white paint. The exposed top metal bond pads are then wetted with solder. The LED dies' bottom metal bond pads are then soldered to the exposed top metal bond pads, such that the mask layer surrounds each LED die to reflect light. A reflective ring is affixed to the substrate to surround the LED dies. A viscous phosphor material then partially fills the ring and is cured. All downward light by the LED dies and phosphor is reflected upward by the ring and solder mask layer.
