Abstract: The Ullman reaction for the preparation of diaryl ethers by coupling aryl halides with metal phenolates is conducted in the presence of at least one tertiary amine sequestering agent having the formula:N--CHR.sub.1 --CHR.sub.2 --O--CHR.sub.3 --CHR.sub.4 --O--.sub.n R.sub.5 ].sub.

Abstract: Benzenoid ethers/thioethers are prepared by reacting an activated halobenzene with an anionic reactant, RA.sup.- M.sup.+, in the presence of at least one tertiary amine sequestering agent having formula:N--CHR.sub.1 --CHR.sub.2 --O--CHR.sub.3 --CHR.sub.4 --O--.sub.n R.sub.5 ].sub.

Abstract: The invention provides a novel process for the preparation of glycidyl polyethers of polyphenols. The process comprises reacting at least one alkali metal salt of a polyphenol with at least one 2,3-epoxy-1-haloalkane in an anhydrous and essentially aprotic medium, in the presence of a compound of the formulaN[CHR.sub.1 --CHR.sub.2 --O--(CHR.sub.3 --CHR.sub.4 --O).sub.n --R.sub.5 ]3wherein n is an integer of from 0 to 10 inclusive; R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4, which can be the same or different, are each a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R.sub.5 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, a phenyl radical, a ##STR1## radical or a ##STR2## radical; and m is an integer from 1 to 12 inclusive. The process is especially useful in the preparation of glycicyl polyethers of bisphenol A.

Abstract: A new industrial product, tris(5-amino-3-thiapentyl)amine, which can be obtained by the action of tris(ethanethiol)amine on aziridine in a molar ratio of aziridine to tris(ethanethiol)amine of between about 3 and 3.5. The new product is useful as intermediate for the production of additives for lubricating oils.

Abstract: Compositions containing at least one aminoalkoxy amine of the formula: ##STR1## in which x is a whole number of from 1 to 3, are provided. They are prepared by cyanoethylation of tris(5-hydroxy-3-oxa-pentyl)amine with acrylonitrile followed by hydrogenation. They are useful as manufacturing intermediates, additives for lubricating oils, and in the synthesis of polyurethanes.

Abstract: New lubricant additive compositions containing at least one alkenyl succinimide of the formula: ##STR1## in which R is an alkenyl group of C.sub.20 -C.sub.200,m is a whole number from 1 to 3,n is a whole number from 0 to 2, withm+n being from 1 to 3.They are produced from the reaction of an alkenyl succinic anhydride comprising a C.sub.20 -C.sub.200 alkenyl group and at least one amine of the formula: ##STR2## in which x is a whole number from 1 to 3. The additive compositions are useful in lubricating oils.

Abstract: New lubricant additive compositions containing at least one alkenyl succinimide of the formula: ##STR1## in which R is an alkenyl group of from about 20 to 200 carbon atoms and m is a whole number from 1 to 3.They are produced from the reaction of an alkenyl succinic anhydride comprising a C.sub.20 -C.sub.200 alkenyl group and tris(5-amino-3-thia-pentyl)amine. The additive compositions are useful in lubricating oils.

Abstract: Novel compositions of matter comprising alkenyl amines are provided. They are prepared by the reaction of a halogenated polyolefin with at least one polyamine having an ether group, such as tris(6-amino-3-oxa-hexyl)amine, N,N-bis(6-amino-3-oxa-hexyl)ethanol amine, N-ethyl-N,N-bis(6-amino-3-oxa-hexyl)amine, etc.The novel compositions of matter provide detergent-dispersant additives for use in lubricating oils and fuels.

Abstract: Novel lubricant additives are provided comprising compositions based on alkenylsuccinimides containing at least one alkenylsuccinimide of the formula: ##STR1## WHERE R is an alkenyl group of about C.sub.20 to C.sub.200, m is an integer equal to 0, 1 or 2, and n is an integer equal to 0 or 1. These compositions can be prepared by condensation of an alkenylsuccinic anhydride with N,N,N',N'-tetrakis-(3-aminopropyl)-ethylenediamine.

Abstract: New compositions, based on alkenylsuccinimides, are provided which impart useful dispersing, detergent, anti-rust and anti-foam properties when employed as an additive in a lubricating oil. The new compositions are alkenylsuccinimides obtained by condensing an alkenylsuccinic anhydride with at least one polyamine of the formula: ##STR1## in which formula R'.sub.4 is a -r-O-r' radical, R'.sub.5 is one of the radicals -r-O-r'-NH.sub.2, -r'-NH.sub.2, or -r-OH, R'.sub.6 is one of the radicals -r-O-r-NH.sub.2, -r'-NH.sub.2, -r-OH, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or phenyl, and r and r' have the definition given fully below using a molar ratio of polyamine to alkenylsuccinic anhydride of less than 1.

Abstract: Process for the selective ortho substitution of a halobenzene sulfonic acid compound with a hydroxyl group or a group convertible to same to prepare the corresponding halophenol sulfonic acid compound which process comprises reacting a halobenzene sulfonic acid compound having at least two halogen atoms at least one of which is ortho to the sulfonic group with an alkali metal hydroxide or other hydroxy containing compound which is capable of replacing a nuclear halogen atom with a hydroxyl group, said reaction being conducted in the presence of a liquid organic reaction medium which is responsible for the orientation of the hydroxyl substitution in the ortho position. The halophenol sulfonates thus prepared optionally may be desulfonated to obtain the ortho hydroxy halobenzene compound.
