Abstract: A method of sealing an end of a battery container is disclosed. The method includes: (a) providing a plurality of supports in a wall of the container toward the end of the container; (b) scoring the wall of the container at a position between the end of the container and the supports; (c) inserting a top assembly into the container such that the top assembly contacts the supports; and (d) folding an edge of the container over the top assembly.

Abstract: A zinc/air button cell having an adhesive sealant applied to a portion of the inside surface of the cell's cathode casing. The adhesive sealant can be applied to the inside surface of a recessed annular step surrounding the cell's positive terminal on the cathode casing. The adhesive is preferably applied in a pattern which conforms to the shape of the annular recessed step. An electrolyte barrier sheet, preferably of Teflon, can be applied to the adhesive pattern on the inside surface of said recessed step, preferably so that the adhesive bonds the edge of the barrier sheet to the step. The adhesive prevents electrolyte from leaking from the cell. The adhesive is applied preferably by preparing a plate having a desired pattern etched thereon, filling the etching in the plate with an adhesive mixture, applying a silicon pad to the etching to transfer the adhesive pattern to the pad, then applying the pad to the inside surface of the cathode casing step to transfer the adhesive pattern thereto.

The battery can include a can having a racetrack cross section; a cathode assembly disposed in the can; a bottom cup disposed on an end of the cathode assembly; and anode material disposed in the can. The battery can also include a seal assembly disposed in the can. The seal assembly can include a current collector having a shape that maximizes uniform discharge of the battery.

Abstract: A tester for determining the condition of an electrochemical power source, e.g. a battery or main cell, is disclosed. The tester may comprise an electrolytic (coulometric) cell connected in series to a auxiliary cell. The auxiliary cell is a miniature electrochemical power cell. The electrolytic (coulometric) cell may have no electromotive force of its own and may comprise an anode and cathode of the same material, desirably silver, with an electrolyte contacting at least a portion of both the anode and cathode. The tester may be permanently connected in parallel to a main cell being tested and is thin enough to be integratable into a label for the main cell. As the main cell discharges, the electrolytic cell anode clears proportionally to the discharge of one of the electrodes of the main cell to provide a continuous visually discernible indication of the state of charge of the main cell.
