Abstract: A keypad is used to enter complex characters using a phonetic input method editor (IME). The user may enter complex characters by combining consonants, vowels, mid-vowels and tones by selecting keys on a the keypad instead of using a full size keyboard. Instead of a one-to-one mapping between the symbols and keys on a full size keyboard, multiple symbols are assigned to single keys on the keypad. For example, on a keypad having ten keys an average of four phonetic symbols are mapped to each of the ten keys on the keypad. The phonetic symbols are applied to the keypad in layers. For example, the symbols may be may be mapped to a consonant layer; a middle vowels+vowels layer; a vowels layer and a tone layer. Phonetic symbols with similar readings may also be mapped to the same key.

In one embodiment the present invention is a multi-configuration network connection point device comprising a first connection interface, a second connection interface, a means for intelligently concentrating data and a communication bus. The first connection interface includes a primary connection port for communicatively coupling to an upstream network device. The second connection interface including a secondary connection port for communicatively coupling to a downstream network device via a wireless technology. In one exemplary implementation the second connection interface is adapted to be secured in a fixed location while conveniently providing the communicative coupling to a downstream network device via a wireless technology.

Abstract: An optical receiver having compensation for signal level transients. The receiver includes an OE converter, a transient threshold compensator, a threshold combiner and a CDR system. The OE converter receives the incoming optical signal and provides a modulated electrical signal having a high speed response for tracking the modulation on the optical signal and an averaged electrical signal having a moderate speed response for tracking changes in the average level of the optical signal. The transient threshold compensator processes the averaged electrical signal for providing a transient feedforward adjustment. The threshold combiner combines the transient feedforward adjustment with a lower speed BER feedback threshold adjustment for providing a decision threshold signal. The CDR system uses the decision threshold signal for recovering a clock, providing the BER feedback threshold adjustment, and estimating the data carried by the modulation.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a computer network and a method for using the network The network and method employ powered multiplexing connection devices which electronically couple two or more network devices to the network. The signals from the network devices to the network are multiplexed at the powered multiplexing connection devices and the signals from the network to the network devices are demultiplexed at the powered multiplexing connection devices. The multiplexing enables the various work-center devices to communicate with the network and, in some cases, to receive power over the network connection. The intelligent electronic circuitry is also capable of aiding in network security and management and in monitoring the status of the network infrastructure.

In one embodiment, the present invention provides a peripheral component with a receptacle having a number of electrical connecting lines. At least one of the electrical lines is used as a signal line by more than one type of connection, which is made directly to the receptacle. Next, the present invention switches the electrical connecting lines between a number of electrical pathways. Next, the present invention determines the type of connection being made to the receptacle. In so doing, an electrical pathway which is appropriate for the connection-type is established.

The laminar flow is changed to turbulent flow thereby enhancing the flow of oxygen to the membrane electrode assembly in the fuel cell and improving fuel cell performance.

Abstract: A method for transmitting a data packet from a computer system to an external device, where the computer system and the external device communicatively coupled by an external connector. Various types of external connectors may be used depending, for example, on whether the connection is a remote connection to a network or a direct network connection. The type of external connector is recognized. An application being used by the computer system to generate the data packet is identified. The data packet is automatically configured depending on the type of external connector. The present invention thus reduces or eliminates the need for user intervention when different types of external connectors are used.
